I've got enough in stock to cope with drinking, so I think it's time for a 'learning' beer. Anyone got any thoughts on this pale ale?

1.044 og, 32.2 IBU

95% optic malt, 5% wheat malt

48g East Kent Goldings at 60 min (21.5 IBU)
48g East Kent Goldings at 15 min (10.7 IBU)
48g East Kent Goldings at 0 min

I was thinking about making this, perhaps repeating the recipe with 5% crystal, but a really basic grain bill that I can use to make lots of single hop bitters.

try this

3500g pale malt
250g crystal
500g demerara sugar
2 oz black treacle
100g goldings
30g northern brewers
add hops at beginning of boil melt sugar and treacle in a little water add to boil :D

Matt
that's the kind of thing I like to do.
We all have different taste so you never know.

What you have there is not far away from where I started with my EverySecond brew. I started with golding as it gave me a benchmark. Slowly, brew after brew it evolved to Fuggle and Styrial Golding. As for the malt, that too is how EverySecond started, although now it has 10% crystal and no wheat.

Brew it :thumb: I know I'd like it. :D

I've just done a SMaSH beer - single malt single hop - all pale malt and all goldings (added as bittering at start of boil - none later or for aroma.)

Never done it before, I'll let you know how it turns out!

Excellent, thanks all. A little reassurance that I wont end up with something undrinkable is good! A couple of suggestions for crystal, so perhaps add that to the recipe.

I like EverySecond, can I shamelessly plagiarise the name?

Matt

Honestly, one of the best beers I've ever brewed was just maris otter and goldings. Upped the gravity to disguise poor technique and it came out about 5.5% ~60 IBUs with a load of late additions giving it a full body and citrus flower hop flavour. Was brilliant. Will be brewing again for the summer, if only I could remember what I did.

Honoured :thumb:
Obvoiusly it is so named cos it's almost every second brew, especially in summer (well anytime except mid winter)

You cannot go far wrong with Goldings

for me it would be pale and crystal forget the wheat.

Fuggles bittering and goldings late is also a winner.

Same here. I go 3.5 kg pale, 1.25 kg crystal, 50 g Goldings for 1 1/2 hours and 50 g Goldings for 15 minutes.

Is that a typo? Did you really mean 1.25Kg of Crystal or 125g? I would have thought that using 25% crystal malt would not produce a Pale ale and the resultant beer would be a it thick and chewy.

But you can't go wrong with Pale malt and goldings . . . It worked for the East India Company for several decades

I'll be very interested in Shane's reply.

I wouldn't use that much crystal in a pale myself, munich maybe but not crystal.

Who are you trying to wind up now Jim? :D
