Saw those in Lidl’s a few weeks back
Yep, someone "gifted" one of these to me a couple of years ago as they knew I "made beer". Truly, truly undrinkable. I spent 6 years in the middle east in the '80's drinking what was basically prison juice, I have brewed bad batches which I have mixed with good beer (anything to save it) this is the only beer I have chucked immediately upon drinking - vile undrinkable stuff. This really is obviously and quite cynically marketed to the "I have to buy him - always a him - a present - ooo he brews beer, here's a good one" crowd, no repeat business. I really think I'd stop drinking if this was it, in a post apocalyptic world.I suspect this will be like a kit I got about 25 years ago - you get a big bag with a tap on it and the LME already inside. Just add hot water and leave for a couple of weeks. You get beer, but it's dreadful.
Was it the Muntons kit as this guy says its brand new (October 2018) and his view on it is its much better than he expected -
I don't know, I don't think so, I was really reacting (viscerally) to the whole marketing concept behind these types of beer and the fact that the one I brewed - of this type - was remarkably, memorably vile. But maybe Muntons have cracked it. But if they have, I don't think it was something worth cracking. Maybe, like splitting the atom, something best left unexplored.
Yes I guess so. I suppose the reason I took it so personally is that I was owed a "good" present, got a bag of turds instead, and had to smile and like it.I get where you are coming from but if someone gets one of these as a present and makes drinkable beer (as the guy says better than cheap supermarket beers) and the bag brewer then looks more into home brewing surely its got to be a good thing.
You've got to let the other person know it's crap, no matter how much aggro it's going to cause unless you can take it back without them knowing. I won't fake present-gasm to the point where I say get me nothing if there's even an iota of doubt. You shouldn't have to suffer for someone else's bad judgement. It's yet another thing I've got a thing about. I've got a good collection going.the reason I took it so personally is that I was owed a "good" present, got a bag of turds instead, and had to smile and like it.
I see your point. I've often wished I'd been honest about this sort of thing - for the very simple reason that if you say its great, you are taken at your word (which is fair enough really) and put on repeat, as a present. This applies to all areas of life (I currently have a low-level passive-aggressive dispute with a neighbor because I assured him some years ago that behavior i actually found objectionable was OK - and its been steadily ramped up since, quite innocently on his part - because I said it was OK).You've got to let the other person know it's crap, no matter how much aggro it's going to cause unless you can take it back without them knowing. Exactly. It's like the buttys your wife puts in your lunchbox, never just tell her they were rally good and super tasty, say yeah I enjoyed those but I don't want them every day lol

Will find out in 28 days if it's drinkable lolYes I guess so. I suppose the reason I took it so personally is that I was owed a "good" present, got a bag of turds instead, and had to smile and like it.
So if it gets newbies into brewing that is a good thing. Assuming they've just beamed down from a non-beer planet.
If it is bought as a present, by someone (always female) who knows nothing about brewing, for a (male) relative who has ever drunk a decent pint of beer, not so good.
You have to brew it and then lie (you will be asked).
I'm sure it will be excellent. i think I blundered into a thread and then went all stream-of-consciousness about a memorably bad pint I had some years ago. But it was memorably bad. Will find out in 28 days if it's drinkable lol
