i take it, it would be possible to make alcoholic water by simply adding sugar and yeast to it. anyone tried it? is it any good? im thinking that if you make alcoholic water and add a splash of diluting juice to it, it should be a decent cheap as chips beverage.

No, it doesn't work unless you use a Turbo or wash yeast.

I've tried this with my usual general purpose wine yeasts and even if adding plenty of nutrients and some citric acid there's very little to get them excited, they will take a long time to ferment the mix and they won't take it very far.

ive had good sucess the two times i did it with youngs champagne yeast, did make it only an easy 5-6% and gave it some lovely tronozymol (if going DIY = b vit and DAP) and citric acid. i would say start at this abv then try for more if this works for you- unless using posh yeast

I tried for around 15% but my my yeasties lost interest and quit at around 5-6%, so I added grape and orange juices and turned it into a WOW.

i have just bottled a trial of this. i used sugar water and a lemon with super wine yeast and nutrient. had an og of 1.070. when it fermented out i racked onto 600ml cool boiled orange cordial and left to ferment out. and just bottled will see how it turned out in a few weeks
