Thanks davesiv but ime using 2ltr PET bottles which is roughly 4 pints of beer, so i wondered if i needed to leave more than the 1inch that would be the case with one pint bottles, would anyone else know? Thanks.

You don't need to leave much of a gap no. I left around a 1 - 2" gap below the neck when I bottled into PETs. The level was well up the rounded shoulder. I guess you don't really need to leave any, but to aid pouring and prevent glugging (which would lift the sediment off the bottom) it's preferable to have a gap.

If it was me, I would probably leave about 1 inch . . . . . but once I had filled the bottle I would loosen the lid and gently squeeze all the air out of the bottle before putting the lid on tight . . . Get rid of as much oxygen as possible
