I've really not been impressed with my first attempt at Wherry, its drinkable, a little murky, but very lifeless. So today I got a Hambleton gas cylinder, fired some in and straight out it came, took the cap off and there's a huge kink in my O-ring at the top of the cap, I tried to straighten it out but to no avail, brand new PB as well. Guess its off to buy a new one in the morning...Ho Hum

Worth getting some spare seals, they do degrade over time.

I've had a few go problematic, now I always give it a quick squirt of CO2 after putting the beer in, just to make sure there's no leak. :thumb:

I'm planning to fill at least one plastic bottle each brew from now on, even if the rest is going in the keg or glass bottles. Being able to feel the pressure with a little squeeze is useful, as a tester. Good way to know if the yeast and priming sugar have done the job and it's ready for cold storage.

PS I used to give an immediate quick squirt of CO2 as well, but now I read somewhere on here that you should only do that after the beer has carbonated naturally, as the extra gas can inhibit the process. Test it empty or with water, though.

I'm definitely investing in spare seals, but this was a brand new PB and when I sterilised it I checked all the seals when I vaselined them, it must have not been bedded properly when I tightened it.

The seal will have an indentation around it when it has sealed on the thread, so I wouldn't necessarily put it down to that.

I drew a pint off my PB last night which had a Wherry in it since early Feb, it came out slowly, I injected some co2 now it's flying out. The beer probably absorbed what co2 was in there over time leaving little to pressure the beer out. All is fine now though!

It is possible you overtightened it if it is kinked.
A bit of vaseline on the seal only and hand tightened is enough.

No, I've checked the seal Scott, and you can see how the indentation lies. Anthony, I tried turning it over and rebedding it, bit of vaseline and another blast of CO2, same problem, it just shoots out the side. New seal it is I reckon.

overtightening i bet - happens to us all at some point. just got a keg back off my brother, and i had to open it with a hot tap and pliers...

The top is buckled, I got a new O-ring, couldn't get it to sit true in the cap, put it on the rim, and noticed it was buckled. Any suggestions for sealing it until the remaining 4.5G has gone?

Ahh, no! But it has slowed it down a lot, might just remain drinkable, and a good learning curve.

I have just tried my other Wherry, which is about 2wks behind, and I have to say WOW! Creamy, smooth, a bit sweet but should dry up a bit, beautifully carbonated. Its going to be a real treat after this one!
