Gratuitous grain shot to warm up.....
So this is the brewday fpr the APA I mentioned in this thread...

Today's experiment was with underletting into the mash tun...
Attempt 1:
Almost no water flow, after a few moments thought...
Attempt 2:
The mash went well, slightly low temperature at start adjusted to 65C with some boiling water. After an hour I made a feeble attempt at a mash out, not enough boiling water and my HLT at only 85C meant I could only get up to 70C or so. Next time I'll actually do the maths before just giving it a go.
This is where I hit potential disaster number 1, my glass thermometer disappeared into the mash. Fortunately I managed to recover it in one piece while cleaning the tun so major disaster averted.
So time to recirculate and drain off, I still seem to be having issues getting the wort to clear, even after recirculating over half the volume of water in the mash it was still pretty cloudy. So I carried on anyway and didn't worry about it.
So, after sparging I had 25l at 1.040 and this was where I made my second mistake.....
Just as the wort reached the boil I realised that I had left the hop stopper off the outlet when I swapped from using the kettle as an HLT. I quickly drained the wort and fitted the stopper and carried on as if nothing had happened. With all this splashing around this brew will definitely prove whether hot side aeration is a myth or not...
The boil and cooling where pretty uneventful with the wort clearing nicely
Quite a lot of break material ended up in the fermenter in the end but I don't think that's a major concern.
Anyway, an eventful brewday with a few lessons learned. I think a rebuild of the outlet and hop stopper thing on my boiler may be called for before the next brew....
