Started this this morning, it's currently in the mash tun

  • Marris Otter pale malt 4207g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]
  • Crystal Malt 313g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]
  • Chocolate Malt 323g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]
  • Flaked Oats 318g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]
  • Roasted, flaked barley 190g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]
  • First Gold Hops, 6% Alpha, 63g[/*:m:ivb2b5nn]

So far getting a lovely rich aroma off the mash, looking forward to hopefully seeing a very dark wort from the sparge :thumb:

I added molasses to mine. Most of the recipes I found that were Samuel Smith's clones called for it. Can't wait till you post how it comes out.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!

Had to take my son to the loo, as it turned out, just as the boil was reached, so I came back through to find it just starting to boil over!

Threw in a few litres of the wort kept back for just this reason, and then a swift clean up op

Oh well. Sods law

^Good job there. I wanna be like the big boys and join the OMSC! Yeast splitting on its way but now it seems like my shipment of brewing salts has gone missing... Bugger.

All cleaned up and 24 lovely litres of stout with an SG of 1058 is tucked away in its FV

A few pics from the day :

A nice mix of grains

PID now has a cooling fan fitted (in a bit of a hurry this morning!) - works a treat - the SSR heat plates were barely even warm to the touch :thumb:

Nice looking brew BigYin, gonna have to try this one :thumb: Have you tried 'Brupaks Anitfoam'? I started using it recently and it works a treat

I'm thinkking I probably should try the antifoam soon

Of course, not having to leave the brew just at a critical point would help too

the fan is on left of the front face of the box, and looking at the box from the front, the SSRs are mounted on the left wall of the box, at 90 degrees to the fan, held clear of the side by about 1cm. The fan draws air in and across the SSRs, and there are lots of holes drilled in the baox to allow the air to exit, so there's plenty of air moving past the SSR heat plates all the time
