Today I brewed my second all grain brew, I chose the hobgoblin clone from the hop and grain database. Everything went to plan except this time I noticed the mash tun lost around 5 degrees over 90 mins. I've made it from a thermos 30l coolbox, I haven't added any insulation other than wrapping it in a quilt. I did notice though that when its full the sides bulge out, so that when the lid sits on top there are small gaps where the lid meets the mash tun. Has anybody else had this problem?? If so can anybody recommend anything??

I went a local pub last night and tasted chocolate and vanilla stout made by Titanic brewery, I may look into doing something similar for my next brew!!!!

My tun can leach heat through the base, so pop it on some styrofoam Mrs Mc's printer came package in

Mine is just an FV wrapped in a hot water tank jacket then tidied up with shrink wrap polystyrene boad on bottom and top drops 1 degree in 90 min :thumb:

I also brewed an AG hobgoblin today - 25 litres of it.

regarding the lid - maybe try putting a sheet of tin foil across the tun opening and jamming the lid on to reduce these losses. I wrap mine in a foil blanket.

When I used my picnic basket mash tun I used to stick a big sleeping bag over it. I didn't actually realise how much heat was being lost until I did it. Pragmatic and very easy.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try some foil and a sleeping bag next time I think.

Let me know how yours turns out, which recipe did you use???

NIce .. well done!

How much dead space do you have in the top of your tun? I've found that covering the surface of your grain with tin foil keeps the heat in if you have a problem with dead space.

will do.

My temp loss over 90 mins was 1c

I used Orfy's Hobgoblin 2 recipe. managed to get 25L at 1.051 which is down a bit on estimated - why I don't know as the volume/gravity in to the boiler was spot on!

You did it then yoof? We'll have to compare brews when they're ready. I get a sleeping bag, lay part of it flat on top of a chair, place the tun on top of it and then wrap it up. Most heat is probably lost through the lid as there's no insulation in the lid (well on mine anyway). I did the Exe Valley Autumn Glory on Saturday.
