active carbon question

Hello all, trying a turbo yeast,sugar based wash. All went well till using liquid carbon,went black,after a 48hr period cleared a tiny bit,added two part liquid finnings, left 72hrs ,cleared a gd bit bit still grey. Bought carbon sachet (like a tea bag) rinsed it a few times then rigged up a filter system and ran wash through it 3 times and not any clearer. Smells like vodka,tastes roughly like it 19.7 percent but grey n a cack aftertaste,tried a few essences nd food colourings to hide but still tht after taste,any advice greatly recieved,thanks

You need a lot more carbon granules than you are using. I'm guessing that the teabag filter was maybe for use in an electric EDITED type machine ?

You need to use a 2 inch plastic waste pipe, about 2 metres long, put some mesh or muslin over the end, fill it about half full with activated carbon granules and then triple filter the wash through this. There will be no smell or nasty taste and it will be crystal clear.

First time with new granules run a few pints of water through just to clear the powdery stuff off it.

Thanks for the reply, i did use liquid carbon aswell. Yeah it for for a smart electric one.

It needs a lot longer to clear when using liquid carbon, I put it in at the start of the wash and it'll mostly be cleared by the time the wash is fermented out, by the time you rack, add finings, degass and bottled it'll be pretty much crystal clear.

Not the best though, in an ideal world it's best to triple filter through activated carbon granules as mm707 says.
