I used to buy it from local breweries. Almost all were universally helpful. Also very happy to give you some live yeast as well.

The last time I went though, they were reluctant to sell it (they said they get audited, and if the amount of beer going out is less than the grain coming in they get accused of bootlegging 🤷‍♂️). Given they were doing me a favour, I didn't want to push it. That was a couple of years ago though, so I may try it again next time I need to buy base malt.

I also work from home, so don't go past breweries on the way to work anymore
Well I work from home, too, and pass a brewery every time I go from the kitchen to the garden. 🤣🤣

My local brewery said it can cause havoc with the HMRC sounds like a similar answer you got. Ultimately they said no.

I've been hearing even higher numbers lately, with some commercial brewers talking about malt prices in future being double what they were pre-pandemic.

British hopgrowers have put some numbers on what they're facing :
https://www.beerguild.co.uk/news/british-hop-inflation-2022/
Between 2016-2021 the aggregate wage rate increase was 37%, although for most growers the figure was higher, as both labour availability and quality have declined as a consequence of the UK’s departure from the European Union. For 2022 growers are faced with:
  • a minimum 15% increase in wage costs
  • approaching 100% increase in fuel costs
  • significant increases in the cost of fertilisers, spray chemicals, string and other inputs
Energy prices are even worse on the Continent, although they don't have quite the same problem with labour.

Just email [email protected] and they will set you an account up. You don't need to have a company to order but you do need an account before they let you order. You also need to book in when you are coming to pick it up.
I had to go through Peterborough last week so ordered crushed MO from Brewers Select. £41.30 for two sacks. Very happy with that and should last me a while sealed in blue drums.

I went by my local brewery the other day to buy another sack of malt, and was very disappointed to see that it was closed. Building all locked, and bailiffs' notice pinned to the door! Dated just the other day, so very recent. Obviously they've gone bust. I went into the building next door and spoke to the woman on reception, asked her if they knew what had happened, and they weren't even aware of it!

So that's another brewery down the pan. ☹️ I daresay I will be availing myself of Obadiah's services again in future.
