Hi all, I ordered a 12v pump which arrived today. My idea is to recirculate the wort for a continuous mash. I have a spare 12 car battery but it's dead as a dodo.

Is there anyway else I can hook this up?

I don't know much about electrics btw as you can tell by the question.

That's ideal!

I honestly didn't know what to look for. I was thinking I'd have to buy another battery or rig something together with 1.5v batteries.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks but I only need something that's fit for purpose, I'll order one of Steve's type although I'll buy from the UK. I waited 6 weeks on my pump to arrive, I couldn't face another 6 weeks :)

Is it a mag pump?
If not you will need to reduce the voltage if you want to reduce the flow.

Ps I have a tattoo power supply unit you are welcome to. I have not used it and it is just collecting dust.

Just ensure the power supply you use has a matched voltage to your pump And can provide the A or ma (amp or milli amp) power ratting of the pump.
Just Dont use a dc power supply unit (psu) with a lower a/ma ratting of your pump (if its rated in watts google a DC watt to amp calculator ;)

the 2a psu linked to above should be ample ;)

However i would suggest especially if being used for mash recirculation an adjustable psu may be better and save on restriction valves and loop back feeds too ;)

I use an ebay china tatoo gun psu as it has a nice easy knob to dial up and down the power to the pump. it can supply more volts so if you use similar dial upto 12v but no more ;) fwfw i find 8v provides a nice steady 2-3l per minute flow through my cfc with my 12v lil brown solar pump..

fit a 1/4" mono jack onto the pump power lead to plug it in, and the tatoo guns are controlled with a simple foot switch so you also need to plug in a shorted jack plug into the foot pedal socket too..

It's getting complicated again

I thought it was just a matter of connecting the pump to a 12v battery and let it do its job. The pump only cost £4 so I don't want to be spending a lot for it not to work.

Where was the pump from? My next task is recirculating my wort...

are you mashing in a tun or biab? if in a tun you want to avoid sucking the grain bed down as it can easily stick and form a solid layer so managing the flow is pretty crucial.

If biab you can suck a vacuum below the bag, slipping a copper vent tube a lil shorter than your kettle height down the side of the bag can provide a simple overflow though.

I'm BIAG with a false bottom in a peco boiler (what a revelation the false bottom has been).

I ordered this pump although the location said UK, it came from China which annoyed me. It's also only rated to 65° which may not suit but I just wanted to try it to see if it worked. For my last brew I recirculated manually while keeping temperature control with my fridge's Inkbird. The Inkbird didn't work great but the recirculation was a massive success. If the pump gives way then it's only £4.57 wasted and I'll go back to manual recirculation (or buy a rated pump for high temperatures). That's why I don't want to spend much on a power supply and I hoped it would work off a 12v battery. It's more of an experiment TBH.

tbh I would be a bit concerned about using that pump with hot wort as it does not appear to be food grade plastic.

Good luck but plan the brewday with contingencies ;)

I also would have reservations, you can buy a lil brown pump from solarprojects UK with a full warranty for brewing ;) or a clone from ebay china if you want to save pennies.
