12/20 Totton Pump

I have just received the following pump from Norman. :party:

Its all very swish but I have a very simple question for all you budding electicians...what do I need to get at B&Q to allow me to connect it to the wall? I was expecting a three pin plug.

I would just buy some 3 core flex and a 13amp plug and make a new flying lead if you remove the square lid on the pump the connections should be straight forward, I would think you would get away with 2 core 1mm flex as it looks like the motors double insulated, however I would put an earth on it just to be on the safe side.

Thanks UP. I can see myself very quickly leaving my comfort zone. However I did wire up my TC-10 pid so I suppose it can't be that difficult. :hmm:

Wiring a 240V 1PH motor is not hard, just a live and neutral, earth goes to the motor body, attach the earth to any screw that screws into the motor body. If the motor body is plastic no need for the earth as its double insulated, just a live and neutral, when you take the square junction box off the top of the motor put your new brown wire where the existing one was and the blue where the blue was, pretty easy, and if in doubt do nowt, and speak to someone who does know how.

These are easy to wire up, you would then need some 2 or 3 core flex and a 13 amp plug for the end.
IP67 means high pressure hose proof.
and make sure the circuit your plugging into is rcd protected.

I take it the cable coming out of the pump has 3 wires, (I can't see the earth wire in the photo) if it is then cut the white connector off and use, one of the water proof connectors (most good electrical wholesalers sell these as well as ebay) as in my above post, or buy a 3 pin connector from B&Q as vossy says,they do the electric lawnmower type although these don't deal with leaks or splashes very well.
As for an RCD If your main distribution board has one that will suffice, It was only advise as a Safety measure, Its easy to get electric shocks when dealing with pumps and liquids.

Can I confirm then, the ground wire from the pump goes to the pump's metal body? Or does it go to the plug? I'm confused!

If there's an earth wire (green/yellow) coming from the pump, wire it to the earth terminal on the plug. Other than that, blue goes to neutral and brown goes to live.

The cable does have an earth wire so I will just get it connected up as suggested. I have some cable and a three pin plug left over from when I was wiring up my TC-10 so once I get the connector I should be ready to go for it.

I got the pump from Norman and it came with the connectors. I also got some of that hose that Vossy was selling a few weeks ago that will hopefully fit.

Although they only say 65 Deg C I have used these connections right up to boiling wort! And I haven't had a leak yet :thumb:
