    Draining a single tier system

Hello K, putting a "T" piece with an extra ball valve pointing down just after the pump allows you to drain any liquid from the system. This "T" piece is between the pump and the ball valve that controls the liquid flow rate. Hope I am making sense :D Barry.

resistance controlled ssr for element control

If you have a big wattage element i.e. 4Kw or 5.5Kw, these are great to get the boil going fast but it would give too vigorous a boil. Also depending on the volume to be heated, 5gall or 10 gall, the fact that you can regulate the Kw of the element is great. I am fitting two 5.5 Kw elements (hlt...

    Igloo 45 litre mash tun

Hi, usually the original tap on the cooler is recessed and that would put your ball valve too close to the cooler. You may need a parallel nipple and a full socket on the outside of the cooler to get the tap away from the side of the cooler. That means you will have your tank connector, screwed...

    Magnetic Pump Failure!

What power supply are you using? What amperage is the pump and is the power supply up to the job? Being a magnetic drive pump, if anything stuck in the impeller the pump should still run but not pump any liquid.

Looking for someone with a pipe bender

Hi, I purchased one of these at B&Q, cut the end off to make a very tidy 90 degree fitting. Fitted to both my HLT and Boiler with compression fitting nuts which screw onto the 1/2" BSP nipple. The copper tube fits into the 1/2" nipple and held in place with a nut and ferrule...

    Which hopfilter/hopstopper when using.....

Hi all, which hopfilter/hopstopper is used on a boil kettle with a bottom drain. With tap on the side there are numerous options. Just wondering as I may change my boiler to bottom drain. Thanks. Barry.

    Stc temp controller

Hello Bignorrs, the STC controller is more suited to controlling fermentation temperature by controlling the heat cycle and cooling cycle on a brew fridge. For temperature control like HLT, I think the PID is more suitable. The PID controls the SSR which in turn controls the heating element. My...

    One for the electricians.

Hi, I am NOT an electrician but you can use 6mm2 twin and earth for up to 9Kw. You should also use armoured cable buried "X"mm deep from your house to your shed. (not sure how deep though!) From the consumer unit in your shed, you can run 6mm2 twin and earth to your control panels or plugs that...

    Yeast Starter

Dx, I read somewhere that if you put the magnets in the stirrer on a strip of thin steel rather than having just two magnets, you have a completely quiet system. Cannot vouch for this though. Barry. PS I did not intend hijacking this thread. This comment only for information.

    Dry hopping

Hi all, I have not started brewing yet but I am reading up a lot. Here is, in my opinion, a very interesting article on dry hopping and I would like the voices of experience to comment on this. http://handsonbrewing.com/brewers-refer ... roper-way/ Thanks. Barry.

Bubblegum Flavours, can't find the culprit!

On another forum it was suggested that bubblegum flavours could be due to fermenting temperatures being too high OR pitching yeast at too high a temperature at the start of fermentation. Just a thought. Where is your temperature probe situated? Are you measuring fermentation temperature or the...

    12v Solar Pumps

I agree with this wholeheartedly :thumb: This is the one I use and it works a treat. I use these controllers for controlling a DC fan on my UDS smoker with a PID, controlling the DC fan on my DIY stir plate and for controlling the 24VDC mag drive pumps. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-10A-DC-12...
