    'Ribena Rose' Variations

First time I tried it, I made the error of not boiling it! It took nearly a month to ferment to anything like! (look at the preservative list, that'll tell you why it needs boiling off!) I've boiled the last few (well, simmered - Ribena boils over VERY quickly, so be careful  ) - for...

    'Ribena Rose' Variations

OK, just thought I'd scribble a few lines to say how my various Ribena wines have been going on over the Autumn and Winter. I've now tried three variations on a theme and, so far, the best has been : 12 litres of Aldi Grape Juice (white and red) 2 x litre bottles of Asda 'Hi Juice'...

Latest 'Ribena' variation - my best 'wine' to date!

OK it's not strictly 'Ribena', but I haven't come up with a name for it yet - quick recipe : 10 litres of Aldi White Grape Juice 2 x 1 Litre bottles of Asda own brand 'High Juice' Blackcurrent Cordial 3kg sugar juice of 1 lemon Young's 'Desert' yeast Preparation consisted of simmering the...

What is this TC? A new trend maybe? Good or bad?

TC is fun, it's quick - it allows us mere mortals to 'make cider' without having to go to all the expense that 'real cider' people have to - and, in my limited experience, as every bit as drinkable as any 'shop bought' stuff. I think the same can be said for the 'from concentrate' wines - my...

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

OK, so it's been 2 weeks now and, to be honest, I wasn't holding out much hope for this stuff until today. It was still cloudy as hell depite two rackings - and I'd put potassium sorbate in, added some glycerin (20ml) and added 40 tea spoons of sugar and it still didn't taste anything remotely...

How much potassium sorbate to use in a 20 litre FV??

Well - I used about 4 full tea spoons (it's Young's stuff). I haven't got any CTs, so I'm hoping it won't react when I put glycerine after it's cleared a bit........ It's all about learning..... :)

How much potassium sorbate to use in a 20 litre FV??

As it says really. The instructions mention a teaspoon or two per 'demijohn' but don't specify a size - would I be right assuming it was a 5 litre one? And would it then follow to add 8 teaspoons to 20 litres (ish)?? :)

    filtering wine

OK - REALLY daft question here - just thinking out loud. Can you use coffee filters to filter (say) a wine on it's first racking as a 'helping hand' to make sure you remove as much sediment as possible?? I'm a bugger for losing concentration and siphoning at least a bit of the bottom of the FV...

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

Actually - I've just seen your video of your Wurzel's orange wine Moley - that's EXACTLY how mine went (and is still going) - so I'm happy that it's 'normal' and not me having cocked something up!

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

'Shoulder'?? There's no shoulder on a 20 litre 'FV' (or, as I affectionately called it, the 'BFB' - work that one out yourselves :D ) I only do things in big batches, mainly because I only have big buckets - I guess one day I'll get round to doing little DJs of stuff, but I'm an 'all or...

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

WOW - this stuff has gone bezerk big time!! Somewhere between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon, it's gone fermenting crazy! Right now, it's not even bubbling, more just a constant stream of air!! There's masses of foam in the FV and some 'bits' have found their way up the airlock...

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

To be honest, I've no idea as to whether adding sugar is going to work or not. The last batches of TC I did (just apple) had no sugar in them, as I've read that it can thin out the taste, but I ended up blending about 10% of plain apple juice into each glass full anyway, as it all went a bit dry...

    Apple and Pineapple 'alcoholic drink'

Is it a wine? Is it a cider? Who knows what it'll end up as .... Obviously due to being *cough* let down *cough* with a rose wine making kit I was going to get on the go, I've decided to have a dabble at something quick, so I've thrown 12 litres of apple juice and 9 litres of pineapple juice...

    How the HECK??

After more than 40 years of not being a drinker, I am now someone who likes a drink. Unfortunately, working in the NHS means I can't afford to fund my new-found hobby without cutting down on other luxuries (like food). And then the kids bought me a wine kit for Christmas, and being a computer...

First batch of TC - RESULT!!

I don't know whether I'd be able to last 2 years - but I might see if a bottle or two can be put aside until later in the year......... I don't want to risk the entire batch, but I'll be kicking myself if I don't find out what a couple of months storage does....... I think my sanitation is...

First batch of TC - RESULT!!

OK, quick recipe : Morrison's 'value' apple juice, cider yeast, yeast nutrient, sugar. I added a packet of yeast and the nutrient to 4 litres of apple juice in a 5 gallon FV on day 1, then added 4 more litres each day for the next 4 days, making 20 litres in total (I read this as a recipe to...

    Smelly cider (from a noob)

OK - after a really close examination, my worst fears are unfounded! What I thought were white spots of ? contamination are nothing more than little pockets of VERY fine bubbles!! I used a sterile dressing to start mopping up the surface, and the fact that it was just bubbles became very...

    Smelly cider (from a noob)

Cheers again for the help - and if I may, I'll take some of that yeast!! :D PM on it's way :)

    Smelly cider (from a noob)

Cheers Tubby - OK, the apples were basically just given a dose of boiling water before being chopped up - I guess that's over enthusiasm and not really knowing much! Same goes for the nutrient - I just thought I was being clever, I guess!! I might just leave it another week or so and see what...

    Smelly cider (from a noob)

I'm having similar problems myself - so I'm completely open to suugestions on where I went wrong : I used 20 litres of apple juice (from concentrate) - starting with 5 litres, mixing in the cider yeast (and nutrient) a small amount (600g) of sugar, and then adding in 5 litres of apple juice a...
