    Hot Break Question

I've always hovered over my simmering brew, diligently skimming off the hot break 'crust' and flicking out the garage door and usually all over the dogs back, who seems to enjoy lapping it up off the grass :wha: It's just occured to me however, that the hot break and all its crud might well be...

    wort chiller

I regularly use my homemade copper immersion chiller, probaly once, maybe twice a month. I always give it a good rinse before immersion, but can't help notice how bright and clean it looks after the cooling has finished. This surely means something must be washing into the wort. I don't want...

    yeast

I got some brewing yeast from a local microbrewery and he told me it was collected from the top of his last brew batch. He gave me enough to pitch into my next brew and I was wondering if it was that simple? can I just skim off the top of fermenter each time I brew and store in sterilised jam...

    conditioning

OK...I'm now the proud owner of a fully functioning fermentation fridge, fitted with a heating tube & variable temp control. I'm currently fermenting a London Pride recipe, using genuine brewers yeast, which was generously donated by a local micro-brewey &I've never seen fermentation action...

    ph level

I'm familiar with the united utilities website, as I input the various profiles into the calc on this forum. That said, I have not seen any reference to published ph data...please let me know where it is hidden, as it's not in with the detailed report that I use. Cheers

    ph level

I use Johnson test papers to measure my mash ph, which always reads too low, i.e somewhere between 4.6 - 5.0. I thought the strips might be faulty, as the tap water reading was the same as the mash, so I ordered some more and they're exactly the same. I always put my water profile into the...

    False Bottom Question

Just wondering if anyone has made, or uses a perforated stainless steel false bottom in a rectangular coolbox. I have a 32l Thermos box and currently use a home false bottom, made from drilling and shaping a plastic chopping board, which sits over a braided hose. It works very well but because...

    Loosing the will!!

Help Please!! I started all grain brewing last year and used to use one fermenting bucket inside another, with holes drilled in the bottom for my mash tun. It was pretty lo-tech stuff but worked a treat. The thing is I've now 'upgraded' to a 30ltr coolbox, which I've added a valve-tap and a...

AG #3 - The priming sugar experiment

well done...that's a really interesting insight. I do believe that the sugar is quickest to carbonate & condition, but the others may well develop / mature over a longer period. Defo worth re-posting in say, another 4 weeks

    Suitable Heating Element??

As it's going into a Sanke Keg (lawfully aquired) I do have enough internal space for it and as the holes I need to drill are only 15mm it shouldn't be to difficult to seal. Time will tell and I'll post pics when it's up & running (fingers crossed)

    Suitable Heating Element??

    Thermometer Choice

Just wondering what is the best probe thermometer for use in homebrewing. I have used some of the cheapo ones off ebay, but they don't last very long and all give different readings. Is there a quality thermometer out there, that's generally accepted as the best suited for homebrew. (in mash...

    Maturation Times

Hi, I'm keen to understand what is considered to be the optimum time a beer needs in the bottle to reach its best. Is it just down to alcohol levels, or do different beer styles mature and hit their 'best' at different rates? Reason behind this question is simply because I have 3 different...

    Extending a Dalex tap shank?

Cheers, I thought about that, but I don't want to mess about with the structure / integrity of the fridge door, as I think it will affect the stability and rigidity of the taps when mounted. I want to get it right as her indoors will not be pleased if I ruin the spare fridge :hmm:

    Extending a Dalex tap shank?

Hi I've got 3 dalex taps, which I hope to fit to my kegerator fridge door. However, the threaded shank is about 1" too short. (i.e it would not be long enough to pass through the depth of the door with enough thread exposed inside the door to fix the nut ) Has anyone encountered this problem...

    Hi to All

Hello. I'm in Manchester and I'm on a very steep (almost vertical) learning curve regarding All Grain Brewing. I've done 5 or 6 batches so far and been really pleased with the results. 1. Black Sheep Bitter Clone 2. Guiness clone 3. Timothy Taylor Landlord Clone (twice) 4. A random stout...
