Celebrating 10 years of AG brewing

Approaching 8 years for me, but only sporadically for the first few years.. Its only since covid that I really found the passion for the hobby and fully immersed myself into learning the processes, styles, history/culture and competitions. Love it - spent far too much over the years, but its...

    Welsh National Homebrew 2024

Got them. Thanks Jack for fighting the IT gremlins and huge thank you for organising the event! In the interest of constructive feedback, im not a huge fan of this format of scoresheet. Just a few tick boxes and little in the way of describing the beer. I get they prob allow for judging to be...

    Sterilising with Videne

I use sodium percabonate for cleaning my kegs as it doesn't foam like crazy unlike chemclean or other similar mixed brewery cleaners and does a decent job.. I've never read that it could be used as a sanitiser like that - but i'm no expert on chemicals

    Sterilising with Videne

If you are keen on the IO star route, I've found this supplier, seems to be in stock, never used them before though so can't vouch for them - assume they are ok: https://brewco.uk/products/io-star-32oz-dual-neck-bottle-946ml

    Sterilising with Videne

if you have a stubborn infection that a typical brewing alkali cleaner mixed to a high strength isn't shifting then prob a few other ways to attack it. I'm sure you've thought of some of these, but this is where my head would be on zapping the bugs: boil (even pressure cooker) small bits like...

    Sterilising with Videne

Personally never heard of using Videne in homebrewing before. Get yourself some sanitiser specifically designed for homebrewing uses like chemsan. 10ml makes up 5litres so it goes a long way

Father Hook - off taste - any way back?

FWIW it does sound like yeast stress/yeast problems - was the yeast/kit particularly old? it should have only taken around 3 to 4 days tops to fully ferment down 1.036. Although I mostly AG, I did do a kit a while back that displayed similar characteristics, slow to get going and once finished...

    Are CamLocks safe?

I once had a camlock fail while pumping wort around and it sprayed everywhere making an absolute mess all over the walls/floor. Not happy bunny. At the time I had a mix of camlocks with/without the holes for the securing pins and it happened to be one without the holes/pins that failed (I did...

    No rinse no foam sanitisers

Another +1 for just buying sodium percarbonate in bulk for your bucket blaster.. I have a diy bucket blaster and use sodium percarbonate which works well. Need to rinse them though as ideally you'd be giving the inside a keg of quick rinse/dose of sanitiser as well before storing

Brew Books - What's On Your Shelf??

My copy arrived yesterday as well and had a quick flick through it.. Looks like a decent book. The recipes look really good to me. A nice selection of styles and difficulty as well with some good notes on how to brew them.

    Star San and distilled water

Using distilled or RO water also helps stop that slight "slimeyness" that you can get on things if you use hard water, especially if you leave bits in the solution for any period of time. But as above with the cloudiness, the slimeyness doesn't affect the product, its just a thing that happens...

    Easy clean / Chemsan etc

100% - This is a hobby where the product is ingested. Do the right thing, use sensible chemicals that are generally widely accepted as fine and sold within the food/beverage industries..

    CAMRA Homebrew Champion 2024

I nearly got confused by the date as well! was ready to send mine in on Monday until someone in the homebrew group pointed it out to me lol.. I think the bottle conditioning, 2L requirement is actually quite a high bar compared to other comps which i suspect puts a lot of typical comp brewers off.

    Easy clean / Chemsan etc

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Year 1 Centennial harvested last night.. Really surprised I got anything as it took so long to get out of the ground compared to my other hops, I thought the rhizome I planted back in feb/mar time had actually failed. Also, even though it was last out the ground, it has beaten my other hops to...

    Easy clean / Chemsan etc

Also if you are able to use distilled/RO water to make up the Chemsan (or Starsan), then a batch will last a good while. I make up batches of 5L at a time and keep it handy to dunk things in as needed. A batch for me can last 2-4 weeks with my usage. When it gets too cloudy/mucky, then I just...

    BrewCon 2023 Comp

It is a shame, but I totally get why the organiser has stepped down, its a helluva event to organise and the competition didn't do it any favors. I'm hoping that the TMM/CBC link up are the seeds to a new conference format and in the years ahead that can expand and hopefully host in a hall type...
