    Flameout hops & utilisation

I also use no chill. What I have done before to get my wort down to 80'c is to freeze 3 x 2 litre milk bottles full of water the day before. once I turn the gas off I plop these in and that gets it down to 80 in about 10 minutes. Once at that temp I hook them out with a sanitized fork through...

    Anyone bought from Powell brewing

That was me. I have measured 20 litres in to my pot as this is the amount of mash water I start with. This falls roughly half way between the 20 and 25 litre marks on my sight glass.

    Anyone bought from Powell brewing

Nice one! I didn't want you to get to your first brew day with the new pan and realise that you couldn't connect your hop filter.

    Anyone bought from Powell brewing

Ok just looked again and the copper tail on the shorter one should just push inside the tap hole inside the boiler. The longer one may need the socket, did he not say?

Not sure about the shorter one on Powell site. Looks like it just has a piece of copper sticking out the end. The 12" one on there is the same as my Bazooka.

Yeah the tap and the screen both have male threads. The socket connects the two.

Also I use a 12" Bazooka screen as a hop filter. If you get one of these then you will also need a 1/2" stainless socket to join the screen to the threads of the tap. Got mine from Brew UK I think.

    Anyone bought from Powell brewing

I have that exact pot from Powell and have no complaints having brewed eleven 5 gallon batches with it so far. The pot itself is actually made by Bergland in Germany and I guess Powell modifies it himself. Two things to note though. Had to tighten up the tap fittings at first as they leaked...

    Keeping it cool

Well I had a glass full when barrelling and it tasted ok so hopefully all will be well. The one still in the bucket is already down to 1010 as I brewed it last Tuesday so what's done is done as far as that one is concerned. Going to bottle it up tomorrow night. Cheers Tony.

    Keeping it cool

Dammit I didn't know about these yeasts. Last week I brewed 2 batches of all grain. The first on Tuesday using us-05 the second on Thursday with s-04. Both have been reading 22/24 on the strip thermometer and I barrelled the Thursday brew tonight as it was down to 1010 and clear. (This one...

    S-04 yeast??

Sorry MyQul missed your reply last night. Had a couple of homebrews!! It's all grain so probably protein clumps then. Like I said not really worried just not seen it like this before. Still new to all grain brewing with only 6 batches under my belt so far.

    S-04 yeast??

Yeah that's the thing. I skim because I just chuck the hops in and as they are leaf, tend to float on the surface.

    S-04 yeast??

Thanks for the reply. I normally skim off any krausen at this stage and dry hop. This time I fished out some of the clumps, (some broke up) and dry hopped. So just going to give it 6 more days, take a reading and bottle if ready. Cheers Dad's_Ale!

    S-04 yeast??

Took the lid off my fv tonight to take a reading and dry hop. Normally there is some foam or residual krausen. (Have been using us-05) This time there is fairly clear wort with congealed clumps of what I assume is yeast floating on or just under the surface. Using s-04 yeast for the first time...

    Vienna Malt

My first all grain was the Galaxy Delight kit from Malt Miller and that used Vienna. The malt profile in the finished beer was lovely. Since then my next 4 brews have been either straight MO or MO and crystal and they have slightly lacked that flavour that my first one had. From what I have...

    Vienna Malt

I have bought a 500g bag of Vienna malt to use in my next brew. Wondering how much to use alongside 5kg Maris for a 23 litre batch?
