    Connecting HERMS to Mashtun advice

I do, but you don't have to, lots of folks just use it for the last 10-15 mins to get clear runnings...me, I like the sound of the motor, it's re-assuring in a way ...and then there's the switch power lights

yep Not quite. The pid controls the element in the heat exchanger to maintain a set temp in the mash tun via a feedback loop, the PT100. The flow rate you have to set by either using a ball valve on the pumps outlet (assumes mag coupled pump) to restrict the flow rate to what you want, or by...

It's a Stainless Steel Wort Aerator as made by eskibrew it deflects the returning wort sideways so it doesn't disturb the mash :thumb: A heat exchanger ;)

    Help with Plate Chiller Fittings

I did as Eddie at 1st but have changed over to stainless with time, it's personal choice 8-) Yep, a few have done it, my bigger GPHE but same theory, doesn't surprise me re the dial thermometer. The pic below shows wort outlet front, water inlet behind, both have PT100's fitted, so I can...

No worries, that's what we're here for  ...do you mean the pipework above? I have a 'naked' picture of that, no build though so to speak, but it'll depend what you want from your system as to whether it's relevant. I also forgot to mention above, all that pipework is on a incline to the...

In that case, I share Fils opinion, I don't see the need for a mash tun. They can be used, it's not a problem, personal preference at the end of the day, if you want one, fit one :thumb:

    Is my tun too big?

A 50ltr mash tun is spot on for 46ltr medium strength brews, that was my preferred set up a while ago for a few years. I use a 80ltr mash tun and don't think twice about doing 23ltr brews in it, the size of the mash tun isn't as important as having a reasonable mash depth to act as a 'filter'.

Clumping yeast - what did I do wrong?

Does it look like this? If so it's probably nothing to do with the yeast, you've probably used too much kettle finings, what did you use, protafloc...if so this is the result of using too much  ...where are the ducks when you need them  ...it makes racking the beer fun...not!

    Thermopot sight glass

Fil...have you thought the thermo pot might be the HLT, they are a good way to conserve energy independent of use 8-) dj, I'm sure I've seen this done on the forum but can't remember where  The twin skin makes it awkward but it's not impossible, I'm sure someone will be able to point...

Outlet in base of mash tun, preferably with little dead space, or use tap. Pump somewhere it will prime easily, preferably below base of mash tun. Then pipework to return runnings to top of mash, without disturbing mash bed. If you make different size brews it's handy to have a height adjustable...

What and where to buy ball valve fittings

THBF have been supplying custom made stainless steel bulkheads for quite some time. They're actually cheap for a custom manufactured parts but if you prefer 'codging' something together with ptfe it's a lot cheaper ;) ps, that's no slur on ptfe parts, I used them myself before the ssbh's...
