    Kicked off well :)

    Toredan's Brew Journal

Seen this done a few times and rather liked it. Instead of multiple brew threads I'm just going to keep my logs here. Today's brew was the American Stout by Greg Hughes from the bible. It called for Amarillo hops which unfortunately I was out of so subbed Centennial instead. Target was...

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

Fab post Steve, will use this for sure as water chemistry is something I've never really bothered with before. Thanks!

The age of the average home brewer?

30 and been brewing for a couple years now. It's not the average age that surprises me but the 'length of hobby' that does, seems we don't really have many that have been brewing for years and years! Then again I haven't seen a few of the forum regulars post yet ;-)

    Bending the rules

I LOVE a black IPA. Saddle Black from Purity at the minute is my fav! I keep trying my own recipes but for some reason none end up hoppy enough :/

    Bottling from a corny keg

Using a party tap at the minute annoyingly but I can pour quite slowly with it now :)

    Bottling from a corny keg

That is interesting! Carbonation stayed the same once you opened the bottle?

    Bottling from a corny keg

Wasn't attempting to make it complicated, just never done it before so was taking my best guess. Thanks for the info though. :)

    Bottling from a corny keg

Got a corny with around 15L of beer left that I want to swap to bottles. How is best to do this? I force carbed the beer at around 20 PSI for a week. Considering purging the co2 from the keg and letting the beer warm, bringing the co2 out of the beer. Then I guess purge again then bottle the...

    Cheap sparge water heater

I usually do BIAB and for sparge I do a mash out then plunge the grain bag into cold water to mash. Some say cold sparging ruins the beer but I've not yet tasted any difference. :thumb: Edit: By "cold" I basically mean not hot. Room temp in my flat is around 25c so bottled water around that...

Mosiac Pale Ale - No head or carb :(

Thanks mate :thumb: Moved the batch to the airing cupboard and gave them a little shake to get the yeast back into suspension. Time will tell I guess. However, it hasn't put her off. We brewed the Northern Brown Ale from GH's bible last night!

    Emergency yeast

I use the Wilko Gervin Ale Yeast, it's been confirmed a number of times to be Nottingham yeast by Danstar repackaged. Only £1.75 a pack. :) http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=57052

Insights into the evolutionary history of brewing from 157 yeast genomes

Awesome post Ian! I'm super guilty when it comes to yeast of just sticking to us-05 and nottingham and only looking at grain/hop bill for flavor mixing. Really need to get into yeasts more. Anyone recommend a good book for the homebrewer?

Mosiac Pale Ale - No head or carb :(

To be frank, I often crack open my first bottle after a week in the warm and half hour in the fridge. Usually loads of head, bit of green apple taste but that is ok for the first taster bottle. This one however didn't have a single bubble! My flat is 26c at all times and after inspecting another...

Mosiac Pale Ale - No head or carb :(

Wife wanted to learn about making All Grain with me so I decided to do a Clibit SMASH. http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51779 So, recipe was as follows; 1kg MO 5g Mosiac @ 60 10g Mosiac @ 15 10g Mosiac @ FO Bottled after 10 days or so and left in bottle for...

    Warmest Room

Live in a town centre flat. Walls are 'double skinned' and ALL my neighbors have their heating on. Mine hasn't been turned on in a couple years now and as I sit here all my windows are open. It makes brewing in the summer impossible. :(

    Warmest Room

Ironic, my flat is always way too hot and I'm looking for the cold spots :( 27c ambient liquid temp at the minute.

    Buckingham Stock Pot

I use two of the small 5L ones for small batches and actually I really like it. Not as flimsy as I expected after reading feedback on amazon.
