First brew a few teething problems.

Don't even think about chucking it! Looks like beer to me - let the fermentation take its course and see what you get. Did you take a hydrometer reading when pitching the yeast? if so, take another after a week and post up your measurements. If not, buy a hydrometer for your next brew! Good...

    First brew bottling complete but.....

It'll be fine mate, the bits should drop out while you condition the bottles. Refrigeration will help. I transfer to a bottling bucket too, adding the beer to the priming solution. I use these guys to help filter the sediment, might be worth adding to your tool kit...

Two Stage Chilling With Tap Water - Experiment

I'm looking forward to hearing your results - just so happens I have a fridge-freezer sat between my water source and chiller at the moment!

    Wanted: Bottles

Hi everyone I'm planning a few days of back-to-back batches as I'm moving jobs next month and have a week off. Being a brewer, that's an opportunity!! Need to stock up on bottles to make it viable - does anyone have a stash that they need rid of, or can point to some decent opportunities? I'm...

Advice please - heatwave causing problems!

Bumping this to update on the results, and to ask a final bit of advice. I ended up bottling both of these beers, but neither turned out too well. For the Tripel, I reflected on @foxbat's advice and decided it was ready to bottle. It's OK, but has some off flavours which I guess are a result...

Advice please - heatwave causing problems!

Update on this post, I'm still having problems! I followed Linalmeemow's advice and moved them back to the warmer area. Last Sunday, the Saison had dropped to 1.030 and the Tripel to 1.024. The Saison was showing airlock, but not the Tripel. On Wednesday I recieved a package of ingredients for...

Advice please - heatwave causing problems!

Hi folks I brewed a couple of 5 gallon batches of extract recipes just short of 2 weeks ago, one a Ginger Saison with OG 1.062 and a Tripel with OG 1.084. Fermentation for both took off as expected and had high growth for 3-4 days before dropping off. I took hydrometer readings on Sunday (day...

    Is it ready for bottling?

I'd say yes, ready for bottling. I've had plenty of brews that kept producing airlock activity after they'd been at a steady SG for a few days. The risk is if it's still fermenting you get bottle bombs, but so far I've not seen that (not stopped me being paranoid about it though!)

    Bottling - Tips?

Thanks all for your replies. I reckon I've got the whole process down to approx 1 hr per 5 gallon batch, plus bottle prep time. Whilst it's not much fun, I don't think it's going to get much quicker, so i'll just work on strategies for keeping myself entertained while I do it. Drinking a few...

    Bottling - Tips?

Hi All I have 3 x 5 gallon batches to bottle tomorrow. While I love my beers and the results are worth the effort, I don't mind telling you that bottling day is beginning to fill me with dread, it can be a pain in the ass, and it't taking me several hours. I've asked for tips elsewhere for...

How important is temperature in fermentation?

So glad I posted this thread now, I've learned loads! Will definitely invest in an inkbird next month and set up the fridge, and I changed plans for the brew day we did in Friday to make sure we used yeasts which can cope with a bit more heat. To update - what prompted my initial post was...

    Hello!

I heartily recommend trying the Imperial IPA first. So good I brewed it twice, then did a variation which added Oranges at the end (nicked the technique from the Orange Hefeweizen recipe). Planning to taste that on Friday while brewing a 3rd batch of the IPA!

    the-home-brew-shop

I use these guys every time, except for the odd ingredient they don't have. Only issue I encountered was using their website with Google Chrome, it kept dropping my basket mid order. Worked fine in IE - just a tip in case anyone encounters the same!

    Sourcing and preparing bottles

Thanks very much for the tips! I think the thoroughness is because I don't know exactly where the bottles have come from, how long they've been sat around and so on, so I might relax a bit as I begin to re-use what I've got. Will definitely get some Oxi powder, hadn't heard of that one. Cheers!

How important is temperature in fermentation?

Thanks everyone, some helpful tips there. Be interesting to taste my most recent batches then! I have 2 main take-aways from this, I'll test the ambient temp in all the rooms in the house and see which is most appropriate for a british summer, and i'll look at the fridge mod idea properly. Up...

    Hello!

Given that I've just whacked 3 posts into the 'general brewing discussion' forum I'd best introduce myself... My name is Mr Snrub. Well, it isn't, but if you watched the Simpsons you might at least know where that comes from! I started extract brewing in January, and am currently following...

    Conditioning time?

So... like most new homebrewers, I'm very eager to try what I've brewed. General rule so far is ferment for approx 2 weeks, bottle and leave in a warm room for 2 weeks, then put in the cellar. If I understand the '2+2+2' recommendation, I should be drinking beer after it's been in the cellar...

How important is temperature in fermentation?

When you say "easy to set up" - do you have any guides? I've read a lot online, and to be honest I glaze over reading what look like complicated electronics! (I actually read more about this for drying meat than for brewing, but the principle's the same). Do I just need to crack on and try...

    Sourcing and preparing bottles

As I've mentioned in another thread, I'm pretty new to homebrewing but have done a couple of 5 gallon batches per month this year (shared with a friend). That means that I have a constant need for bottles. For the first batches, we bought brand new bottles online, but quickly realised that's...
