Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

The instructions should give you the temperature range for the specific yeast used in your particular kit. However the instructions on kits are often woefully inadequate. Eventually you will want to choose your own yeast each of which had its own characteristics- but that’s a whole other story...

    first AG Brew

I would check your gravity readings for the next few days when you are sure it is stable you can then cold crash. Observations - the brew is a lovely colour! Also If you plan to do 10 litre batches regularly you might consider a 3gallon fastferment conical fermenter. Dump everything in the...

Amazing - do you know the grower?

    Brewers Clarex

I’ve used this several times now - primarily to get clearer beer but also because my son in law suspected he was gluten intolerant. I used it in when I pitched after protoflack at 15 mins. It didn’t really seem to get the beer that much clearer ( I still had a protein haze) but equally was dead...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Just dried the last of my hops. Got 2kg wet and 450g dried from 2 rhizomes planted in April. Centennial and Cascade I think but one of the labels disappeared. Ended up mixing them together because my husband couldn’t really tell where one plant finished and the other started and I have just had...

You're stuck in quarantine with only one beer

Probably leffe or maybe Duvel. Hard question.

    Fruit scones

Cheese and garlic sounds fantastic- I saw a recipe recently that substituted beer for the milk in savoury scones. Now that must be worth trying!

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

In the big white mesh tray in the photo. In my utility room which is very dry. Did a test sample which took about 3 days to reduce by 80%.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Begnners luck - first harvest of centennial from rhizome planted in April this year. As instructed on packet I did not trim or actually do anything at all to the plant to encourage root growth. Indeed I didn’t even water - but the water table is very close to the surface here. Really happy to...

    Yeast nutrient, needed?

I always use it. It’s pretty cheap so I think it can probably only make the yeasties happier so why not?

    Young beer or infection?

It’s basically still brewing so is unlikely to taste great. Unless there are other signs of infection such as a pellicle it’s probably fine. You really need to give it the proper time before it is ready. Even when it tastes thin to start with it often comes good in a month or two and I do find...

    Speed Up Carbing?

I read somewhere that inverting the bottle everyday will speed up carbonation. I don’t know if this will do it any good though. Some beers such as Kveik are good to go as soon as carbonation is finished. Also if you are in such a hurry kegging is the answer.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

My first year growing hops trying to decide if they are ready to harvest they’ve got a very small amount of brown on them, they crackle to the ear, but do not pull away readily from the bine. They smell fantastic. Any views on whether they are ready?

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

My understanding is that it can take up to three years maturing until the full concentration of hop aroma/ oils are achieved.

    Hi from Stirling, Scotland

My absolute favourite is James Morton’s ‘Brew’. It’s practical and down to earth and the recipes just work for me.

    Hi from Stirling, Scotland

I am definitely not a neighbour ( I live in Guernsey) but would be great to try a 1906 Scottish (or is it Scots?) recipe. Won’t be this week though as I had a total knee replacement this afternoon!

    Hi from Stirling, Scotland

Welcome to the forum. Its good to see another lady on here. It would seem that you and I are in a very similar place. I have been brewing again for a couple of years after a long break. I haven’t yet got a Robobrew but definitely want one!

Can I store in a corny keg

I have recently started kegging. Whilst it is not particularly complicated and I have now got it sorted - it takes a bit of getting used to. So I would wait until you have all the kit, so you don’t introduce unneeded variables into the process.

Adding sugar to cider kit - or not?

I made a cider kit and reduced the sugar by half - it was fine.
