Experiment in reducing cold break for those without chillers

Hi guys, I have done 3 brews in the last couple of weeks and tried something new. I have not had time to build my wort-chiller yet so got to thinking about how I could reduce cold break in the FV. So far it has worked on the last three brews a treat. Just before I add the irish moss and final...

    Required temperature for alpha-acid isomerization

If I remember exactly I once read somewhere it's 75c but you wont get them all out and will take longer. Maybe if you are not getting the bitterness you could try increasing the hops. You will also struggle with the protein conversion too at normal boil times too. Do you normally make cloudy...

    Back sweetening Cider with splenda

I've just used 1 level tsp per 500ml and it is spot on for a close attempt at an olde English cider clone. Still bitter and tangy but not too dry.

Gaymers Olde English turbo Cider clone. ( old brown bottles)

Yes mate I thought the grape juice would give some of the goodies the cider apples normally have. I couldn't source any Malic acid locally, in fact the guy in the lhbs looked at me as if I said a foreign word. I have managed to get some online so will be trying one of graysalchemy's...

    Wilko's pear cider.

I tried another couple of these last week it is definitely improving with age. It's starting to lose the alco pop taste and tastes a little more "Real" if you know what I mean. :)

Gaymers Olde English turbo Cider clone. ( old brown bottles)

Hi guys I put out a request for the above a while back and thanks to some advice from graysalchemy have come up with my own recipe that comes pretty close. It is slightly stronger in alcohol effect though :) I did 5 demi-johns with different recipe's to find a close flavour so this is scaled...

    Coopers Australian Lager Review

Right that's it I've just tasted my first AG and it tasted better than the above before conditioning. Kits are much better than they used to be but throw the kits away guys and get proper brewing with the advice on here. It's like chalk and cheese. :D

How I miss those brown Olde English cider bottles especially when they were full. :thumb:

    Bottling from primary FV

To me it depends on how mucky the primary is after the yeast has had it's party. A clean primary and I leave it. Muck top and bottom I use a secondary. Mucky airlock and it's definitely a bio suit combined with condom. :D

Cutting stainless steel pipes - the easiest/best way?

I'd go with the above but you will need a decent pipe cutter. eg one for exhaust pipes etc.

    Sparkling ginger and blackcurrent Ale/wine

It takes the back of your throat the same as Idris by the look of my wife after two 330ml bottles I think it may be a winner.

Made my first AG in more than 20 years.

I thought the BBQ was my only excuse for a session in the garden. In fact I can make a pork chop take hours. :D Now I have another excuse. 6 hour boil this one takes love. (Snigger)

How long did you normally boil for mate? Did it depend on the strength of the brew?

I'm a bit in the dog house to be honest as I managed to peel some paint off the kitchen ceiling with all the steam. My wife said I will have to sort something out next time. I wonder if my son will notice the vent running through his bedroom? :D

Your right. :thumb: I was saying all the way through I will do this and that next time. I just can't get over the luxury of a tap and filters at the business end. It's a bit of a learning curve from using a bag. I sussed out I had to throw the first run offs gently back into the tun. I also...
