Using a refractometer for end of fermentation...

Can't help with anything else, but to all intents and purposes, Plato ≈ Brix (down to about 4 decimal places) Edit: assuming that your refractometer gives one or the other!

Coldest day in seven years -14.4C

Same here: don't have a brew fridge, so hefted a DJ full of dryhopped beer outdoors for a few hours at -2C or so before bottling Job's a goodun!

Perhaps not mushroom for this thread?

If you're happy giving away a good chunk of personal information, there's a UK mushroom growing group on Facebook. I'm a member as it's something I've often toyed with trying, but never got round to... Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mushroomgrowinguk/

    Capping Prosecco bottles?

If you've a wine corker hanging around, you can use that to cork those bottles. I used a Wilko corker and Belgian corks and cages from Malt Miller. Worked a treat! My labelling game could probably use some work though...

Transferring batch to a different fermenter

One thing to consider for next time is that moving a hop forward beer like a neipa is the potential to introduce oxygen into the beer which can cause loss of hoppy freshness and some less than favourable off flavours.

Which movie(s) have you watched recently?

Saw Creep (2014 US film, not the 2004ish UK one). Reasonable 'found footage's style romp. Does well with a limited set up (2 characters). Well acted and worth a watch, but not brilliant

    The Mixed Fermentation Thread

Black Friday at beerhawk did glass 6l (edit: actually 6 US gal, so 25litre or so...) BigMouth Bubbler for £25 IIRC...

    The Mixed Fermentation Thread

Re FVs, if they're glass they can be reused, provided yr sanitation is up to the mark. The issue with mixed fermentation in plastic is the big loada scratches they get for bugs to loiter. Glass is less prone to scuffing so less of a risk. Re bottles, again provided yr sanitation is up to the...

    The Mixed Fermentation Thread

I've a good few mixed fermentation beers dotted about the house. 1. Last year I brewed a simple golden sour split into 2 X 5l DJs. One DJ got Wyeast #3278, the other got the same plus a load of bottle dregs. Got left for 12 months. Currently sat in bottles trying to get rid of a cereal flavour...

    Kveik

I've had some vials sat in my fridge a while. I'm happy to chuck one in the post for you if you're interested? It's the post fermentation trub from a non commercial Sigmund Voss strain I got sent from Norway. Lots of orange on the nose. Feel free to PM me your info. Can likely put it on the...

    Slime!

One of my mixed fermentation beers went through about 4 months of ropey. Taste stayed fine, but very odd mouth feel. Has since cleaned itself up nicely and I'm looking forward to trying some bottles over the next few weeks! Hopefully the link should work. It's a clip from a gravity check in the...

    Bulletproof mash schedule

Not had Holsten Pils in years! Would be interested to see the numbers for it though. I'm also tempted to try a Brut IPA. They finish in the region of FG 1.000

    Bulletproof mash schedule

Another T1 sort here! A quest for low carbs is part of the excuse I gave myself for getting into mixed fermentations. Gotta keep pushing that FG down! Of course, I don't listen to the part of my brain that tells me that the OG can also be pushed down :)

    Brewing with dried fruit.

I found out the hard way that dried fruit is very thirsty! It will soak up a LOT of the liquid it's placed in, so bear that in mind when you're working out volumes and amounts. Also a lot of dried fruits have a coating of some oil or other to stop them clumping together. If you give them a...
