New piece of shiny - Hydra immersion chiller

Put my new Hydra chiller to the test yesterday. It's a game changer. I chilled from boiling to 20°C in 6 minutes. That's in a very full 30L kettle. I brew late at night and along with a 30 min mash and boil my brew day was just over 4 hours and I was in bed not long after midnight.

    More Advanced Water Treatment

That look's a lot like the HM Digital meter that I paid quite a few quid more for. Slightly different body but I bet the insides are the same. I really like it and so far it has proved reliable for the past couple of years.

    More Advanced Water Treatment

What is it that is worrying you about your brewing water? To me your water doesn't look bad for brewing with, you just need to reduce the alkalinity for pale ales, which is what the CRS is for. The sulphate and chloride are close enough that you could tweak it either way if you want too. If CRS...

    London Beer Lab

Not bought spray malt but I've no reason to doubt that it would be fine. If you are interested they run a monthly homebrew club on the 3rd Thursday of the months. It's very friendly and they usually get someone good into talk and there is always plenty of homebrew to share.

    Two-stepping yeast

Interesting that it fermented out that much. I'll shut up about champaign yeast not being able to ferment complex sugars, that's clearly done the job.

    Bourbon and Vanilla Stout Advice

I've not made one so this is only based on Internet reading but I think you may want more than 50ml. There is a very famous recipe by Denny Conn for his imperial bourbon vanilla porter. He uses 2 vanilla pods in 5 US gallons (19L) but he adds 400ml of bourbon. That does seem like a lot to me...

    Suffolk water

For anyone considering water adjustments, I would really recommend contacting Neil at Phoenix Analytical. email - enquiries @ phoenix-analytical.co.uk (remove the spaces to get a valid address). He runs analyses about once per month and it is both cheaper and more comprehensive than what you...

    Phosphoric Acid

Are you using the free version of Bru N Water? If so, it's worth bunging Martin $10 for the paid for version (which you get free updates for too). It has quite a bit more functionality and I wouldn't be surprised if the dilution method that you want isn't covered by it. I can't imagine the...

    New Kettle Advice

How are you heating your kettle? Are you using a gas burner or do you need a kettle that you can fit an electric element to? If you are looking at electric options then I can thoroughly recommend a 30L Burco tea urn. You will need to fit a replacement tap but that's not hard. Mine has been...

    Burco 30ltr boiler (tea urn)

I hang my bag by a hook and twist it till it lifts out of the wort. I brew in a shed so there's no room for a pully. BIAB bags can be very hot and difficult to handle but I use a set of double gloves which makes it much easier. I've got a pair of thin wooly gloves on the inside and then super...

    Burco 30ltr boiler (tea urn)

Before you do anything with you Burco give it a test run. I've been using mine for 3 years with no problems. I'm thinking about upgrading this Christmas but that's only because I'm making larger batches.

New piece of shiny - Hydra immersion chiller

It doesn't restrict the flow rate in the same way as a single coil chiller does. You have 3 smaller tubes running in parallel coming out of a 15mm pipe so roughly three times as much water can pass through per second. It is also more efficient than a single very large coil because in that case...

New piece of shiny - Hydra immersion chiller

All in it was about £230. Shipping is a killer at $103 and then you get dinged for VAT and Parcel Force handling charges when it lands on these shores. I'd priced various options for a DIY version at £100 - £120 so it's twice the price of that but there is no way I could have made anything as...

New piece of shiny - Hydra immersion chiller

I believe the 3.5 minute chilling time is to 10°f (5.5°C) above your ground water temperature. My water is about 18-19°C in the summer and 9-12°C during the cooler months. It should be fine in the winter and might take a few more minutes in the summer but that's the same with my normal chiller.

New piece of shiny - Hydra immersion chiller

I just received a new piece of shiny brewing gear. My Hydra immersion chiller from Jaded Brewing arrived yesterday from the US. It really is a great piece of engineering and I can’t wait to start using it. I brew in the evenings when the kids have gone to bed so I’m often chilling wort at...

grain got left outside - is it ruined?

Keep an eye out for mould, that will be what gets it if it is damp. Water also speeds up staling reactions so I would use the damp grain ASAP and it will probably be fine.

Looking for a Razorback Type AG Recipe

Based on the description of the beer I think this might get you fairly close https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/725995/razorback-ipa-imitation. I don't know your set up but I've set the efficiency to 73% and gone for brew in a bag with a dunk sparge. This gives you a 5.7% beer...

    Two-stepping yeast

I've also heard that Champaign yeast are not good at fermenting complex sugars so I would be very interested to hear if it did reduce the final gravity. In my book, a good bet might be US-05 which will often hit 80% attenuation. The issue now might be that champagne yeast and I believe the...
