baffled by small amount of wort extracted (relative noob)

Because every setup is different, different people have different boil-off, pipework losses etc. So I made a spreadsheet to do the water quantity calculations and refine it after each brew if necessary. I start from the desired fermenter volume and calculate the mash and sparge water needed, and...

Stu's Brewing Blog - Slow and steady does it!

Thanks, I will add it to the "to make" list 😁 It's a while since I made a wheat beer.

That wheaty mango beer sounds lovely. What is the batch size and hop quantity/times?

    Are CamLocks safe?

It's handy because you can use the ring to hang the hose up!

    Is cask beer this simple?

I read about this and it seems to be intended for cans. How do you use it with homebrew? Anyone know if they are still available?

    Octopus energy

I am with octopus, I too resisted a smart meter for years until I had solar panels plus a battery installed. I also have an electric car. That's when I switched to Octopus and got the tarrif that lets me charge the car and my battery overnight for 7p/kwh. I can then use the energy in the battery...

    Muntons flagship Kolsch

I guess people get different results - I used K97 in my Kolsch recipe and it turned out great. 2 weeks primary at 18 degrees, 2 weeks cold in the fermenter, 2 weeks bottle conditioning at normal temperatures ie. not lagering, then kept them in the fridge until drinking.

    July 2024 - Belgians

Is there time for me to enter? I have a fresh Belgian Golden ale bottled last weekend. It will need another week at least before I send it, if that's OK.

Boil Times and how to Know What to Use

I use 30 min boil for one or two of my recipes. I took advice from David Heath's video on the subject.

@kenstel this was a while ago now. How did it turn out?

    Re-using Puro Oxi?

I seem to recall Harris Suresan is described as breaking down to water after an hour, hence it's described as no-rinse. Certainly I have had no issues using it as such, although I have pretty much switched to star san or equivalent other brands. I still have a tub of Suresan that I will use from...

    RAPT pill issues

    Q: "I bought X and I have trouble making it work, what shall I do?" A: "don't buy X" 🙄

    RAPT pill issues

Did you manage to communicate with it for setting up at all? Or is that what you are trying to do now? IIRC it creates a WiFi hot-spot for initial setup and you connect your phone to that. That allows you to configure it to talk to your normal WiFi.

If the SG is matches expectations then it's probably fine. Leave it alone for another week. I suspect you are expecting more obvious signs. After a week the active fermentation is pretty much done.

Started first brew today..... made a ****oo

Sounds good. My rule is don't rush it and it always improves with time. As long as it's not infected, that is.

Regarding the progression of the fermentation, here is a typical graph from my Pill floating hydrometer. Ignore the actual SG numbers, they are not exactly correct but the key point is the shape. Notice that the vast majority of the fermentation happens in the first 3 days, then it drops off...

    Help with equipment purchase please.

I have a system like you describe, cool box mash tun, catering boiler etc. Where I did think it was worth spending a bit more was on the Grainfather conical fermenter, simply due to the temperature control, most importantly the cooling. I got the cooling pump kit and a chiller unit to provide...

    That homebrew taste after barreling

Obviously there are multiple things that can go wrong. What is "the homebrew taste"? The most common undesired taste I get is a bit of yeast.
