    Water Treatment And Starters

I rarely crash my starters and haven’t noticed any problems from pitching the spent wort. That said, they’re usually 1.5l or less, i would crash a 2l or bigger starter just in case.

    Yeast for extra ABV

WLP007 attenuates highly but is pretty neutral. I’d have thought the easiest way to bump abv is just to increase the base malt.

    Your "house" brew..

I think I’ve only rebrewed a recipe twice and it hasn’t came out like the first attempt either time which is annoying! I’m rebrewing a black ipa and an amber ale in a few weeks so hopefully they’ll resemble the originals.

    Recipe Advice

Personally I’d chuck some high alpha hops at the start of the boil to aim for about 50/60 IBU.

    Recipe Advice

Dry hop doesn’t add bitterness, 0 minutes will add some bitterness depending on how quickly you chill but it shouldn’t be anything significant (unless chilling takes aaaages and remains at a high temp for a long time).

    Recipe Advice

3 malts and 3 hop varieties, hardly excessive. Looking at the recipe that works out at about 20ibus, is that right? For a 6% apa/aipa is expect a lot more personally.

    Hop bag in boiler

I use a hop spider and love it, mostly because it’s a piece of cake to clean with a hose pipe. I was concerned about utilisation from the hops when I bought it but I can honestly say I’ve not noticed a difference since I started using it.

    Priming fruit beer?

I’ve never done one but once you’ve added the fruit I’d expect you’ll need to let it ferment out again. Is it the omnipolo recipe you’re looking at? If so, there have been a few threads on here by people who’ve brewed it so they should be able to help...

Is my yeast starter any good

That looks like a layer of yeast on the bottom to me. As said above, chuck it all in...

    Hoppy taste to my brews

Whilst I agree with not questioning the taster, you can’t measure hoppyness with IBUs, you can have a bitter beer without much hop flavour and vice versa. It would be good to get more detail from the OP.

    dry hopping 5 litre kegs

I’ve thought about doing it a few times but never got round to it. I can’t inagine you’d need a great deal for a 5l keg, I was just going to use pellets and throw them in when I filled the keg. I’ll do it one of these days.

Home Brew Competition - November 17

November is the third month of the new schedule so the category is Freestyle so you can submit whatever you like. If you're not sure if your beer fits the category just ask the judge for the month, it'll be their decision to accept or not. The judge is @Ajhutch assuming you're happy with this...

    Dry Hopping

I always try to use pellets for dry hopping but if I do use leaf I put them in a sanitised nylon bag with some tea spoons to weigh them down. You’ve got to be careful not to overfill the bag otherwise the hops in the middle don’t get wet. It’s a really simple way to do it...

    Yest Stalled i think.....

How fermentable are the sugars from a pumpkin?

    Made a massive boo-boo

I agree with what others have said. Even if your first one is bad don't bin them, chances are the worst that will happen is 1 or 2 bottles go bad.

    Competition clarity

Sorry, that's because I've been lazy/busy. There used to be one but when the format changed it wasn't really relevant anymore and I haven't got around to starting a new one. I'll do it soon...ish.
