    Bri's 2018 brewing attemps :-)

Hi Bri, as soon as fermentation starts and alcohol is introduced the refractometer readings start getting effected and will deviate from a hydrometer gravity readings, So a refractometer is useful pre pitching, But post pitching the yeast your probably better off with a hydrometer reading...

    Corny Fridge

If buying new i would consider a small chest freezer bearing in mind it will probably require a 4x2 or 6x2 constructed collar to increase the internal height to accommodate disconnects and beer/gas lines. And a weekly/biweekly exchange of the towel dropped in the bottom to absorb any...

    False bottom

looks like 1/2 a 'garth style' hop filter which is simply a mesh pocket or envelope feeding the kettle drain, some clever folk have sown SS mesh to create the filter, I bought 2 x £shop SS splatter guards pulled the handles off both and the rim off one and used the split beerline trick to...

Has anyone grown hops from seed

way to early to tell, give em a month or two and they will develop gender characteristics, my only experience is with rhizome propagation so am only familiar with the flowers.. google should provide pics of the male pollen sproutings and i suspect they may start shooting out earlier than the...

    Gas management board

email Norm [email protected] aka Corny Norm, ive not bough from him for a few years now but he sells on ebay and is known to sell good stuff at a reasonable price and is expert on all things corny. however a diy job employing aquarium regulators may be a better home option if at all...

First all grain attempt - FAIL

its a bit (teeney bit) risky what with airborne wild yeast, but any invaders will be in tiny numbers compared to what you would normally pitch post boil so i doubt you will loose much OG if any fingers crossed.. just keep it lidded Lots of folk wil perform an overnight mash so its not that...

Has anyone grown hops from seed

they will develop male/female characteristics in yr 1 BUT!! you cant get any established hop varieties from seed, Every beer hop comes from a cloned plant. the hop plants sexual reproduction involves male and female plants its the female flowering plants that we want as any seeds produced...

    Help. Fridge thermostat bypass!

with both fridges i bypassed the thermostat in i traced the wires back to the compressor itself, in both cases iirc the brown live feed had returned from the thermostat on a black wire, so feeding my fridge with an earth neutral and live feed connected to yellow/green, blue, and black in my...

    Flaked Barley bulk buy.....

Probably a lot easier in the long run just to raid the cereal boxes as needed, cornflakes make a fine substitute for any flaked maize requierments, and no brand wheat bricks are an easy substitute for wheat additions (flaked/torrified/etc). And rolled oats are rolled oats..

    Bottling - Tips?

too late for this sesssion but get yourself some thin walled silicone tube, its very very elastic and can easily be stretched, ebay will provide you with lots of choices, a 1mm wall thickness is ideal, but thicker walled tube still works well just takes a bit more encouragiing onto hard tube...

    Brewing Kettle for a noob

Ha am glad i added that gallon note now, almost everyone falls for it though usually when building a recipe and not buying hardware.. the other metric that can cause some confusion especially if diy kettle building, is the BSP standard, for example the 1/2" bsp sized fitting popular for drain...

How long do you retain temperature control of fermentation?

with a basic mo malt bill a brief diactyl rest post primary seems to clear the brew nicely, though i will often leave the primary for a full week regardless of gravity readings. and even then most beers benefit from at least 4 weeks to mature post conditioning. One brew was quaffaable within...

How long do you retain temperature control of fermentation?

try different yeast, brews, using salsafe-S-04 brewing mainly Smash brews with MO with a target OG 1:045-1:050 and a fermentation temp of 19c primary is regularly complete within 4-5 days, a further 24hours with the temp set to 21c prior to 24-48 hours @ 0C to crash chill prior to kegging means...

    Brewing Kettle for a noob

wow top shelf options there, unless your looking at induction heating many of us are more than satisfied using modified stainless steel catering stock pots. £30-£40 iirc for a 50l lidded pot tho its been a few years since i last bought a pot. and the thin skins of the pots make them a doddle...
