So. Who remembers Beer Festivals? Which/where was your last?

I've done plenty of whisky festivals but never a beer festival. I need to sort my life out and get them in my calendar.

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

A couple of cans of Lidl's Perlenbacher lager for me. It isn't too bad actually.

Old brewer, new to this game

The Young's American IPA is an excellent kit, and definitely my favourite out of all I have done over the years. I just so happened to take delivery of one last week along with a Mangrove Jacks pink grapefruit IPA too, but that has gone on first as I have never tried it. As soon as it is done...

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

I'm pushing on with my 3 Rabbits Hoppy IPA to get rid of it🙂 After a 3.5hrs solid conference call finishing at 5pm, I need a couple of three pick me ups tonight.

    Making cider with no press

I used and electric juicer once but never again. It may have been just the juicer but it was a chore and kept clogging up. The bottle jack option looks genius.

What's your fave beer glass shape?

Now not the best, but very practical, I have a Bulmers cider oversized pint glass which I guess is to account for ice you get with cider. It is the perfect size to pour a whole Cooper's PET bottle which is about 700mm or something like that.

    First brew questions

If it's bulging again then there must be some pressure building up so it sounds like it is still going as expected and the CO2 is probably just escaping somewhere. If rebulge isn't a word, it should be😁

    Gozdawa Czech Pils Kit

A hop bag can mean that the hops don't get to fully do their thing in the beer. It can be a bit of a blessing when it comes to bottling though as they can keep blocking up your syphon tube or tap depending on what you have, unless you use a few tricks to avoid it from happening. The other issue...

    First brew questions

It could be a case that when you added the hops that the lid on your fermenting bucket hasn't quite gone back on fully so give the edges a push down. Another 'test' you can do is gently push the middle of the lid all the way down, as it usually bulges up, so the airlock bubbles and then leave...

    Bottling time tips and tricks.

After years of wedging books and all sorts of stuff under the one side of my FB at bottling time ( to tilt it to get all the trub to the one end) for syphoning, I spent about 30 mins one day cutting a square piece of plywood and attaching a 4x2 piece of wood to safely do the job. I also added a...

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

I'm going off piste tonight. I've had a couple of Hungarian Palinka's. A plum schnapps type spirit, akin to turps, which gives a proper kick and I love it🙂

    What did you brew today?

I've put my first MJ Pink Grapefruit IPA on today. It smelled lovely when I cut it open so I am definitely looking forward to it. The plan is that I'll get that bottled up and stashed away for Christmas, but I'll see how it goes once I sample one.

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

I'm having a couple of 3 Rabbits hoppy IPA that I brewed ages ago and wasn't overly impressed. I'm still not convinced by it but it's not too bad. I bought a couple of bottles of Zlaty Bazant that I spotted in Lidl yesterday for tonight, but I sank them last night instead 🙂

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

I popped into Lidl earlier and spotted Slovakian Zlaty Bozant which I have only ever drank in Bratislava. Not a bad beer. Unfortunately i only bought 2 which are now long gone🍺

Starting a brewery in an old pub

I saw a programme on the telly a while back of a couple who set up a brewery in the countryside somewhere. There was a series on about people jacking in their jobs in places like London, selling up, and starting new lives. I forget where now but the husband did all the 'commercial' stuff and...

    Three weeks?!

It's going to be hard to judge without a hydrometer reading. I'd be tempted to try and lift the temp slighty to between 20-22 and see if that helps them along for another week and finish them off.

Real stella as I remember from 90s 5,2%

Same as a lot of lagers these days. The popular ones of yesteryear all seem now to be brewed under licence in all other places except where it first came from and the ABV lowered. Stella, Tyskie, San Miguel, you name it. So those, I pretty much side line the lot and stick to my one life long...

    Three weeks?!

Did you take a reading with your hydrometer at the start to compare to now? That's the only sure way to know. If the temp has been on the lowish side it will lengthen the time it takes to brew. I have left one or two brews in the past for 3 or 4 weeks before bottling and they were fine, so you...

    Lager brewing issues

Hopefully the carbing up will be ok for you. I can only go by my own experience (and taste buds) with the Cooper's European Lager and I have found it excellent, and probably one of if not the best lagers in a single can IMHO. I'm not sure how long it has been conditioning for, but I'd...
