    Hydrometer reading off the scale!

I should probably have asked about this when it happened but never mind... I was gifted some frozen damsons from last years harvest so, obviously, I set about making a damson wine. The recipe I was using called for 2.5kg of fruit and 1.5kg of sugar to make up 1 gallon. I thought as I read it...

    Wherry

Hi guys, I've had my wherry fermenting for two weeks now and I've just taken a hydrometer reading of 1.014. I was expecting it get down to 1.010 so I'm not sure what to do. I started off at 1.042 and a 3.7% brew would be a little disappointing. Is there likely to be any life left in it if I...

    bacon sandwich

Ideally Home made white, thick cut back, smoked, tomato and whole It's acceptable to substitute home made bread for a decent shop loaf and I can't cope with unsmoked. Thin bacon is a waste though and hp is only allowed on sausages. Cutting the sandwich is definitely a sign of deviancy.

New doggy member of the family

Nice pooch! It's a shame that staffys have got such a bad reputation because of some of the folks who like to own them. Put them in a good, caring home and they are lovely dogs (same can be said for most breeds though). I'd love a dog myself, probably a cocker or a basset, but with two cats...

Worst book you ever read (or tried to)

One of my all time favourites! It must a few years since I read it last though. Time to dig it out of the attic again.

Worst book you ever read (or tried to)

I thought Angels and Demons was okay and was bemused that the turd that is The Da Vinci Code was the one in the spotlight (not that either book, or indeed any Dan Brown book, deserved the spotlight). I hated Of Mice and Men when I read it at school but I suspect outside of an academic setting I...

    Tastings

I might need to go further afield then. My local Tesco has neither at the moment. The lack of Old Rosie is particularly disappointing as their cider section is nearly as big as their ale section but full of Jacques and similar.

    % Alcohol

    You'd be "sharing" the 40% through out the 6 litres so you'd have 40/6 = 6.667%.

woodfordes wherry beer kit approx abv 4.5%

Looks like a project for the weekend after next. Must admit the bulging FV lid is causing some concern.

woodfordes wherry beer kit approx abv 4.5%

Mines been going since Saturday. I was a little concerned by reports of it being a bit of a pain to get the fermentation going but mine's not had any problems yet. A nice thick head of foam and the bucket has swelled to bursting (really need to get a lid that'll take an airlock). Brewed to...

    Tastings

Fresh tub of steriliser turned up today (no shop near by I'm afraid) so I can get the other beer kit I've got going. Really want to get a WOW going but WGJ is proving hard to find. None of the local supermarkets seem to stock it. The elderflowers are starting to turn here. Need to get of my...

    Tastings

Yeah, I'm new to brewing. The wine was my first brew and the TC followed shortly after. Both are now being left to mature a bit. I'm thinking a couple of weeks for the TC and at least a couple of months for the wine. I'm already trying to build up stock levels. Currently I've got (all 1...

I want a Wood Burning Pizza/ Bread Oven in my garden

That's just awesome and I don't mean the modern, watered down version of the word. I'm genuinely in awe.

    Tastings

I bottled up both my first batch of wine (an apple and pear) and a TC a couple of weeks ago. A bit of a mix up with bottle sizes meant that I ended up with 5 and a half bottles of wine. I was concerned about the amount of air in the half filled bottled so decided to drink it last night. Very...

    Elderflower Harvest...

Just starting to really come out here. I'm planning on an early morning wander off the beaten track to get to the best tree at the weekend. I think I should be able to gather enough for a couple of gallons each of champagne and wine. Oddly the few tree in the town where I work aren't showing...

Awesome! Just picked up wherry and golden ale kits, 2 new glass demijohns, a 25L fermenting bucket and a couple of fresh airlocks for £33 including delivery.

    First samples

Just finished siphoning of my apple and pear wine and my TC into fresh demijohns. All in all a fairly stress free procedure and, more importantly, it's given me the first taste of my brews. First up was the A&P wine. It came in at 15.9% before topping up (it was more topped up to lower the...

    First TC

I started a turbo cider last weekend using ScottM's guide in the how to section (cheers scott). All seems to be going well, the fermentation has settled down, I've topped up with additional juice and there are visible (and often audible) bubbles coming up the side of the demijohn. Thing is...

    Bread baking

It varies a lot. My most recent starter took over a week to get going and another week before I deemed it usable. It nearly got binned but it's turned out the best starter I've done. I wouldn't worry about keeping it a constant temperature - mine lives on the side in the kitchen so the...

Demijohn not delivered - need advice

Cheers. Option 4 implemented. Hopefully it will be okay when I get back. Nice to know that Wilkos stock this stuff. There's not one anywhere particularly close but the extra miles would have been worth it in this instance.
