    Confused update

I do agree with Terrym above. I didn't mention it initially so as not to add to the confusion. Even if you are reading the hydrometer wrong though, so long as it is the same reading 3 days in a row, it's an indication that fermentation has ended. As Terrym says, 1.000 is low for a beer, but...

    Confused update

If you're drawing off at a tap at the bottom, that might in turn draw a little air in through the air lock. Don't worry about any bubbling or lack of bubbling in the airlock. The only thing that matters is the hydrometer reading. Its at 1.000 now, so if it still reads 1.000 tomorrow and then...

Welcome aboard! What have you got brewing at the moment?

Is this brew buggered, growth on top in FV?

I use a plain old £3 Wilko plastic Syphon tube to transfer from FV to bottling bucket. I pre fill it with starsan then let that drain out, pulling the beer through behind it. A technique I saw in a video @Hoddy put together.

water is too complicated for me

What are you trying to brew? The water adjustments will vary depending on the style you are brewing.

    What are you drinking tonight.

Last bottle of an Amarillo Single Hop Pale that I brewed summer 2017 to celebrate my nephew's graduation with a first class degree in engineering. We called it 'First Degree Earns' Even after all this time it's a belter. Farewell my friend.

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

Below is a table that has the chloride and sulphate increases for CRS. In the table it actually says AMS but it's the same stuff. If you are diluting your liquor by 50% with Ashbeck then add the chloride value on the Ashbeck bottle to your water report value and then divide by 2. Same for the...

Is this brew buggered, growth on top in FV?

It looks perfectly fine, stop poking it! :laugh8: Seriously though, is it not just yeast? It's difficult to tell from the photo?

My nephew was one of the cadets that walked the teams out onto the pitch today, which made it all the more special :)

starting with grain - need tips!

If you are thinking of going all grain, I would very much recommend the Greg Hughes Home Brew Beer book. It can usually be picked up for less than a tenner and has a wealth of great recipes for many different styles. I've turned out some great beers with the help of that book athumb..

    Tonoko-Brew York beer clone

Brew York is my local (I'm a very lucky man) and we have our Homebrew Club there. The owners used to be in our homebrew club before turning pro. I can tell you that a LOT of hand toasted coconut goes in that beer and they still do it by hand on small trays in the oven! The Imperial version of...

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

From my reading, this is what I understand. No, Total hardness and Alkalinity are not the same thing. This is important. The 1.22 factor will not convert Total Hardness to Alkalinity. It will only convert Alkalinity in CACO3 to Alkalinity in HCO3. Both Total Hardness and Alkalinity can be...

    Phosphoric Acid

Do you just dilute it say 10:1 then add 10 times as much? Or is the chemistry more complex than that?

    Phosphoric Acid

Experimented this afternoon. 4L of water Alkalinity at the start 153ppm CACO3 Target alkalinity 22ppm CACO3. Spreadsheet says 0.6ml 75% conc. Phosphoric Acid Alkalinity after adding the acid measured at 19.7ppm CAC03 That'll do for me! athumb..

    Phosphoric Acid

I've actually put my own spreadsheet together because Bru'n'Water didn't handle dilution of liquor in the manner that I wanted. I have experiments planned with 2-5L of water to check that my spreadsheet is working and to dial it in if necessary. Good to hear I'm ok to use the plastic syringes...

    Phosphoric Acid

I recently bought some 75% phosphoric acid for reducing the alkalinity of my tap water after reading of others on here using similar. Now I have the bottle and I'm reading the warnings all over it, my question is this: Can I use a plastic syringe to measure and dose it? I have both 1ml and 5ml...

    First AG Brew

Great stuff. Reading your thread it sounds like your entry into brewing was similar to mine. I brewed a kit beer and was bitterly disappointed with it. Being an Engineer like yourself I had to know why and how to improve it. A whole heap of reading later I stumbled on Clibits post and went...

    First AG Brew

Sounds like your brewing adventure is well under way! Have you thought about mashing your grains in a mesh bag? No messing about with a seive and a spoon that way, you just lift the bag out. I had my bag custom made to size for my pot by BJ Filters on eBay for about £7.

    What are you drinking tonight.

An IPA by the Collective Arts Brewery in Canada called Ransack the Universe. Galaxy and Mosaic in this one at 6.8% Very nice. And a Verdant Photon Trails. Very drinkable at 5.2% with Amarillo, Ekuanot and Azacca. Stacks of bitter orange in this. Amarillo is my favourite and I really enjoyed...

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

My Salifert kits turned up today and my results are not as expected! Yorkshire water sent me a report stating that the CACO3 content was 262ppm. I multiplied this by 1.22 to get 320ppm HCO3. Using my Salifert kit, the solution first noticeably turned pink at 0.56 on the syringe and then...
