    Dry hopping advice

If you dry-hop for too long then there's a risk of grassiness rather than bitterness. Personally, I use an unweighted bag and dry hop in secondary at 6 or less days to bottling/kegging.

    Grain Kit - Help

An NEIPA is quite the first AG brew! I’m 23 brews in and am just about to have a go. I’m doing a similar size batch to you and am going for 2g of bittering hops at 60 mins (token effort) then 70g of hops steeping for 30 mins after flame out and a 150g dry hop 3 days before bottling. It’s...

How much sugar in a bottle, for priming?

When I bottle carb I make a sugar syrup of 100g sugar and 140ml water and then ad 1ml per 100ml bottle volume (eg 5ml in a 500ml bottle). Found that one of the kids' nurofen syringes works a treat. After that it's a couple of weeks at around 18 degrees and it's sorted. That works out as about...

    The price of grain

Spoke to a local farmer just the other day, they were harvesting barley destined for a maltster. He said it wasn't the worst yield he'd seen but the dry weather earlier in the year has meant it's all really stunted and the straw yield's been terrible, other issue is the recent wet weather means...

    Dry hopping idea

Do whatever works for you. I use a sterilised hop bag but just chuck it in and leave it to do its thing, then it just gets kegged/bottled however many days later.

Uneven Mashing temperature in Peco EB1D Mashing and Boiling Bin

I would think this is a fairly common issue with boilers. I use a recirculation pump to help with efficiency and temperature control, mind you I also tend to stir the mash too :) Basically I keep as much moving as possible in order to even it out. Mind you the thermostat on the kettle itself...

    My own brewery

Apologies for being a tad slow, been meaning to set up a beer related insta for a while and I’ve just done it - hutch_brewco. What’s yours?

    A series of **** ups?

If your SMaSH grain bill is only golden promise then it will look like straw, it's got an EBC of 5. If you want a bit of colour you need to add a crystal malt, you don't need much to make it an amber. Would need to know more about your process to establish why your OG is low. In terms of your...

    Hop combos experiments.

You're certainly not going to be short of beer to brew for a good while!

    Hop combos experiments.

Definitely a good idea in order to really get to know what a hop variety tastes like. You could also apply the same theory to yeasts too.

    All grain - dummy's guide

Timings of hop additions - it's backwards to how most people see it initially, eg 60 mins means boil 'em for 60 mins not add them after 60 mins of boiling. All the stuff associated with getting the right mount of wort into your fermenter - boil off, loss to grain etc How to read a hydrometer /...

    Hop combos experiments.

I should probably do this. What I tend to do is go in at the deep end and see what happens. Made a good DDH WC IPA the other day as there was a Thornbridge twitter post and that's what my beer style came out as, thought "I'd drink that!" so looked up the style and a few recipes for ideas and...

Want to force carbonate rather than using sugar. Recommendations?

Force carbing cheaply isn't really a thing, the deposit on a 6kg bottle of gas can be over £50 - yes you'll get it back one day but it's still an outlay. But there are people selling kits with all you need bar the gas. My wife kindly got me one from Brew Keg Tap for my birthday and it's been...

    Conditioning beer, what temp?

I only ever age beers over 10% (ish) and never an IPA, they're kept in a cupboard in the middle of the house that maintains 16-18 degrees all year round although saying that there's a few in the beer fridge too - gotta love the consistency 🤣 Everything else is fair game. My mantra on fresh...

    Possible stupid question re kegging

I have a force carbing history of one brew so far so not sure how much help the following will be: I use sodastream bottles and a 9.5l corny in a fridge kept at a steady 4 degrees C. Burst carbed to 30psi, then topped it back to 30 after about 12 hours. After that I kept it topped up to about...

What did you use in terms of sugars for carbonation? Sugar syrup? Carbonation drops?

Help - First Full Grain BIAB and I have low OG

Refractometers are great for constant checking, just need to get the wort to 20ish degrees each time, but that doesn't take lond for the size of the sample you'll be taking. Getting your efficiency and water volumes right in your calculator will take a little while and some tweaking. But...

Help - First Full Grain BIAB and I have low OG

Hi. Well according to that OG you will have a low abv beer but that doesn’t mean it’ll be a bad beer. If you want to up the abv then you could just add any kind of sugar, basically anything the yeast can eat. You could even turn it into something fruity with mango & passion fruit juice! (Other...

    My own brewery

Might sound silly but how's the wi-fi? I make loads on notes on OneNote not to mention Insta and you've not mentioned wifi enabled hydrometers yet. Outdoor network cables are cheap nowadays so if you're running power out there you could add network connectivity too.

    Transporting corny kegs

A bin of icy water should work nicely as a heat sink, unless you're lucky enough to have enough spare fridge space in the cottage of course! YOu can get keg jackets with pockets for ice packs I think too. I'm yet to transport one, but my thoughts are that you'd probably want to carb it while...
