Finishing off my January low/af beers. I have 3 different ones still to try.
The first is a ddh ipa, Lust for Life by Brulo. Very pale colour with a hoppy pine aroma. Slightly thin but not really noticeable with nice level of hops and bitterness (not surprising with Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic...
Just tried a Brooklyn Special Effects hoppy lager. I know they describe it as an amber but it was darker than I expected. Decent hoppy beer smell. The fluffy white head didn't last long.
OK. This actually tastes like a beer. It isn't thin or watery and tastes decent - no powdery aftertaste...
Don't you want me? - Human League
Enola Gay - OMD
Vienna - Ultravox
Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
Hungry Heart - Springsteen
My Immortal - Evanescence
But seriously, I don't think you can look past Mr Blobby or Joe Dolce :confused.:
Yes. You can fill it with cold water to cool the fv down if you are brewing in summer. You can even put a towel or t shirt over the fv with the bottom in the water to get a wicking effect and cool the top of the fv too.
Like I said earlier, I sit my fv in a brand new builder's trug. This means that if there is an explosive ferment, any overspill is kept in the trug and doesn't ruin any carpets etc. There is enough room between the trug and the fv to stuff an old beach towel for insulation
After my disappointing foray into low alcohol/af beers, I'm having a Northern Monk Faith followed by a Heathen. Its good to be back to proper beers at the weekend!
From my limited testing, I would say that Guinness is the closest to a regular pint.
The hoppy IPA's/pales I have tried have been pretty awful and are probably no improvement on Lawrie Mcmenemy's (or however his name was spelt) Kaliber. Ghost Ship was probably the best of those but I would...
This would explain the Big Drop Pine Trail pale ale I had last night - opened the can to THE WORST stale fart smell ever and taste of bad cabbage water - absolutely revolting. I didn't realise they used weird yeasts. Guinness say they brew as normal and use cold filtration to extract the...
The box I bought had a selection of Nanny State, Punk, Elvis Juice and Hazy Jane, all alcohol free. The Punk was the best of the (very bad) bunch so that tells you what I thought of the others!
Trying a Guinness draught 0.0%.
Pours dark, not jet black (perhaps looks a little thin if being critical). Has a thin head which actually lasts ashock1. Aroma is of roast coffee.
So far, so good. Now this is where it usually goes Pete Tong... First sip... hmm, this is OK. Big mouthful... OK...
Next up - Brewdog Elvis AF.
Big grapefruit aroma on opening. Pours dark copper with a lively head. Looks promising so far (stop sniggering at the back).
Head doesn't last too long but that's OK.
Taste... thin and watery with that artificial powdery taste at the end. No carbonation on the...
They have gone downhill in the last 5 or 6 years - I think since they opened the new brewery extension for sours/mixed fermentation beers which seems to have died a death. They have ruined Elvis Juice; Punk is not what it used to be; Dead Pony Club seems different. The only reasonable recent...
OK, OK.... you lot have a lot to answer for. January is usually a busy month at work with stupid hours, so I thought I would try some of these AF beers as a change.
I bought the brewdog mixed pack (8 for £8) and a 4 pack of Guinness 0.0% for £4 at Morrisons.
Decided to try the Brewdog Hazy AF...
You can buy plastic champagne stoppers and wire cages, basically a plastic version of the corks on 750ml belgian beer bottles. See if you can buy larger versions if a standard size won't fit. That might do the job.
Broken into the Christmas stinky cheese selection and started with this Gulden Draak quad to accompany. Then will move onto a St Bernadus abt 12. If I'm still alive (or not in a cheese coma) I have a Duchesse Chocolate Cherry to finish.
Merry Christmas!!!
It depends on the type of beer you like.
I like hoppy IPAs so the kits I have made at least 3 times are the Festival Razorback and Golden Stag and Bulldog 4 Finger Jack. The Youngs American IPA, Pale Ale and red IPA are also very good.
The Brewferm kits are good if you like Belgian beers...
