60 min vs 90 min boils

It depends on your expectations whats typical for the recipe you are interested in. For Munich Helles, I prefer to not evaporate too high and have dialed in my boils to 4% evap rate. There are dangers of excessive thermal stress, excessive decposition of proteins, excessive evaporation of...

Anybody use a beer line chiller to cool fermenter - converting beer line chiller to glycol bath

Here is the link to the Cornelius spare parts shop... might come handy... And attached is the Maxi series manual, in case people are looking for it. Looks like the pump and the agitator are one unit.... worth giving it a go, it's simple enough.

Anybody use a beer line chiller to cool fermenter - converting beer line chiller to glycol bath

I'll take another look and see if I can control the faucet pump externally. That would indeed be the best option. Let us know how it goes. Very interested in this....

Anybody use a beer line chiller to cool fermenter - converting beer line chiller to glycol bath

You want a uniform temperature distribution. Switching it off may not be ideal but you can certainly try and revert of not happy.... Mine already has a pump for that faucet tower chilling loop. Not sure it's powerful enough to move the liquid through my coil but its certainly the energy...

60 min vs 90 min boils

Boiling is often not paid enough importance. A number of reactions take place, such as hop isometization, formation of aroma and colour compounds, increased solubility of certain substances, enzyme inactivation, elimination of microbes, protein molecules and protein-tannin complexes. This...

Anybody use a beer line chiller to cool fermenter - converting beer line chiller to glycol bath

I brew quite a bit of lagers, usually the traditional cold schedule at 9C. I fitted a STC1000 to a Maxi 110 which I got for about £80 in them days... It holds the temperature nicely (50l) and is definitively a great alternative to the more expensive, glycol chillers. Indeed, one does not need...

    Hello from Manchester

Hi Dan. Welcome! I'm a Manchester garage brewer as well ;). I'll keep it a hobby though.

Equipment For Sale Free! Spares or repairs Cornelius Maxi 110

Often it's the thermostat that needs replacing. On this occasion, using an STC1000 is a relatively trivial procedure, with the added benefit of a temperature display and cooling to sub zero temperatures with the use of glycol. Just dip the temperature probe into the water-bath. I use such a...

    Equipment Wanted Wanted - Regulator

My bad (been a while since I last looked at it). It's three not four. This one connects to the bottle and you use your usual john guest fittings to connect the gas lines. First port is for the carbonator.

I've got secondary regulator for 4 lines IIRC. Is that what you need?

oxygenating wort - larger capacity systems

Absoultely. You'd need pure O2 indeed. The fermentation process can be divided into two stages: the initial period and the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnes (EMP) pathway. Once the fermentation begins, it is important to exclude oxygen because the EMP pathway is an anaerobic process. In fact, if oxygen...

oxygenating wort - larger capacity systems

Excess oxygen can have an unwanted, toxic, side-effect on yeast. This so-called oxidative stress that occurs at concentrations over 30 ppm, may lead to formation of radicals and to peroxidation of the lipids and thus to an impairment of the functionality of the yeast cell membrane. I...

oxygenating wort - larger capacity systems

It is possible to harm yeast with too much O2. Values above 30ppm are considered undersirable for brewing (source: L Narziß, W Kunze). My pitching temps are 5C and main fermentation 9C. I use compressed O2 and a venturi tube used for fertilizers (cheap, ebay) to aerate in-line during...
