    Temperature and brew activity

Oh boy... when you get to mashing....

    2nd attempt at a lager.

Well, it's done, ish. Came out of the kettle with an OG of 1060, topped up the demi's and it was around 1049. Not bad for a 1048 target. Needless to say the wort tasted very sweet after the mash and quite nice actually :) Will have to stay in the fridge overnight before pitching in the...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

The mash is on and I've already screwed up and had to add hot water as the temp fell to 61*C. A splash of water from the kettle and quick stir and it's back to 65*C for the remaining 30 mins. As I couldn't get campden tablets tonight, I went ahead and put 1 drop of aquarium dechlorinater in...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

Ended up with this: http://beercalculus.hopville.com/recipes/lager-mk-ii (if the link works). Might have a go at getting it going tonight. Assuming that a more-or-less BIAB with no sparge will get 75% efficiency.

Secondary - Keg or Plastic Bucket

Sorry my last 2 posts where to the wrong thread! :(

Secondary - Keg or Plastic Bucket

Just a thought, without a proper mash tun or sparge arm, basically BIAB, what should I set my efficiency to?

Getting the wort out of the kettle.

Thanks guys. So basically break material in the FV isn't a big problem, avoid it if I can, but it will (as it has been doing) settle out as long as the beer has enough time to clear in the FV before kegging. I read somewhere that if you leave the wort to cool for several hours then the break...

Getting the wort out of the kettle.

One part of the process of brew day I have not figured out properly is getting the wort from the kettle to the fermenter without lifting the boil trub with it. My grain is always in paint strainer bags, as are my hops, but I use protofloc in the last 5 minutes and during the cooling a lot of...

Secondary - Keg or Plastic Bucket

Surely if there was an infection in the buckets the infection would start before the yeast kick off and not be fine for nearly 2 weeks and only kick off when opened? Anyway it's been about 10 brews since I had an infection. I use a screw top barrel and to inspect I just pull the rubber bung...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

Can I use aquarium conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramines? Although... thinking about it, will it not boil off in the boil or is that just chlorine that boils out? My water is soft about 3* KH and about the same GH.

Secondary - Keg or Plastic Bucket

Probably close to 60 or 70 brews over 3 years, so not that bad on average. I suppose it could be environmental. Damp, unlikely, it's a very well insulated and centrally heated apartment. The level of "cleanliness" in my household is another story, I go as far as to stop it looking like a...

Secondary - Keg or Plastic Bucket

Don't mean to be a scare monger, but I have infected 4 brews, 3 by opening the FV in the later stages of the ferment and 1 after transferring to the secondary for clearing. Day 10: Open fermenter, smell, mmmm lovely. Day 14: Open fermenter, YUK! WTF? Spidery, webby, white film all over the...

    2nd attempt at a lager.

I made a half a55ed attempt at a lager about a year ago, but being very new to mashing grain, having only previously used it for a few speciality grains with beer kits I didn't boil the wort for very long. That and fermenting it too cool for 2 weeks and removing it for a rest resulted in it...

I started 2nd ferment in barrel when I should have bottled!

Unless the barrel is pressure sealable and you have a tap on it, AND you can get a CO2 injector for it... you have limited options. If it's only been a day or so since you added the sugar I would hurry up and bottle it now. Worst case is you get less gas than expected in the bottles. If it's...

    homebrew at argos

In fact, if I understand UK law correctly, even if it DID contain alcohol it is still NOT illegal for a minor to attempt to purchase it. It IS however (or would be if it contained alcohol) illegal for the shop to SELL it to a minor. A minor cannot be charged with purchasing or possessing alcohol.

""It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to attempt to purchase this product as it contains alcohol."" I'm pretty sure it's not and I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

    Co2 triple regulator

Should be fairly easy to source and replace the dials. I have a single one (2 stage) version of these and it came with a 60PSI gauge. This is what is recommended... your gauge should be able to read twice your maximum pressure. and 30PSI is force carbing pressure. Still doesn't make it easy...

From kits to what? Next step?

For temp control I use my bath. So it really depends on if you have kids or SWMBO. By using the bath you not only provide a way to raise or lower the temp (using cold or warm water), but the sheer volume of water in the bath around the fermenter creates thermal mass and thus stabilises the...

From kits to what? Next step?

It depends on how you look at it. If you look at it like it's close to a full extract brew, then I suppose you could say, why not just do an extract brew? Also consider the beer kit as just cheap liquid hopped malt extract. The way I look at it is the transition away from sugar. You can...
