AG4 - Malcolm's Tower Ale 20/4/2010 with photos (and video!)

Here are a few photos of preparation for the brew: Scotts rolled oats for toasting in the oven - 150c for an hour. The brewery! Temperature-controlled freezer for fermenting in. Small heat pad and a fan controlled by an ATC 800. Some I made earlier. HLT made from a Burco boiler...

AG4 - Malcolm's Tower Ale 20/4/2010 with photos (and video!)

I will be brewing this tonight - a slightly modified version of Dunfie's "Malcolm's Tower Ale". Slightly modified in that I have upped the aroma hops a bit to use use up what I have left. Tin of golden syrup for the invert sugar - this will be my first go at adding sugars to an AG brew. I will...

    Gypsum

Cheers for the advice. Will go with chucking it in the mash/boil rather than treating in advance - seems easier.

    Gypsum

Gypsum - treat the liquor or chuck it in with the mash? Latter seems easier but wondered if there are reasons to do the former? Cheers Andy

    Priming bottles with sugarcubes?

I got a box of silver spoon rectangular sugar cubes and they fit down the neck of all my bottles no problem.

    Priming bottles with sugarcubes?

The cube ought to dissolve pretty easily in warm beer I would have thought. Even if not the yeast should take care of it. One way to find out...! Will give it a bash with a few bottles in next batch.

    Priming bottles with sugarcubes?

Anyone tried using sugarcubes to prime bottles? Seems like an easy way to get an equal measured amount into each bottle and they fit down the neck OK. Not tried it but think I might give it a go for my next bottling session. Easier than faffing about with spoonfuls of sugar. Andy

    Serving Glasses

Cheers. Loads of info there. Will be good to replace my old scratched pint glasses which were liberated from the student union bar over a decade ago with some decent glassware!

    Serving Glasses

Hi, I am going to request some new glasses for my birthday. Has anyone got opinions on what the best glasses are to serve homebrew? Does shape make much difference? Traditional pint or the fluted stye pint glasses? Are some better for head retention than others? Look forward to some advice on...

First bash at a Cheeky Vimto

What's the view o. How to bottle this? Carbonated or not. My preference would be non- carbonated so will prob just chick it in pet bottles without priming. Not likely to last long.

First bash at a Cheeky Vimto

Haha! My kids are 1 and 2 yrs so should not have this problem!!

First bash at a Cheeky Vimto

Just racked this at 1000. TASTES GREAT! This is the best TC type brew I have tried so far. Tastes less dry than the TCs (must be the Vimto). About 8.5%abv so it's strong, and deceptively so. Does not taste alcoholic or dry at all. This will be dangerous! Going to put on a 5 gall brew of...

    Sticking ferments

Well I roused and lobbed in yeast vit yesterday and bumped the temp up a couple of degrees to 21. Still stuck at 1020. Gonna chuck some more Sf04 in shortly. If that fails to move it, what should I try next???! Cheers!

    Sticking ferments

I wonder if my method of aeration has not been effective then - it creates loads of foam though....!

    Sticking ferments

I have generally thought I have done a good job of aeration by jugging in my top-up liquor from a great height. This creates masses of foam on the top of the FV too and certainly appears to be aerated really well. Maybe I could do more though. I have just chucked in 5tsp of yeast nutrient...

    Sticking ferments

Have not tried yeast nutrient (in beer) - I will try lobbing some into the IPA and give it a rousing and see if that gets it going again... I think my water quality is pretty good - pure H2O.

    Sticking ferments

I'd ad that my most recent on (brewers choice IPA) went off like a rocket with a vigourous fermentation starting with a few hours but stopped at 1020 after 3 days and now wont move further.

    Sticking ferments

Hi, I seem to get a lot of fermentations that stick at around 1020-1018. I have been doing kits thus far but use good quality SF04 yeast and control fermentation temperature properly at 19c with a thermostat but still the majority of my brews never drop to the desired FG. Is there possibly...

    Volume gauge for Burco HLT

True - but it's not quite as "bling". :-) That said, I may well go with a dipstick - would do the job just fine and would be sight less hassle than fitting a tube to the burco. Wonder what to mark it with - marker pen would probably bleed undesirables into my liquor. Andy
