    Electrical problem

Hi, I only have 2 on at a time. I'll try getting a better quality extension lead for starters and try and run one upstairs, perhaps the outhouse and kitchen are on the same ring main. Thanks for the replies fellas.

    Electrical problem

Hi, the extension cables are made from an extension cable i had lying around that's why I used it, both are approx 10 feet in length. The elements are from cheap Tesco kettles (£4.99) other than that I don't know anything about amps etc. Consumer Unit? The sockets are approx 5 feet for the...

    Electrical problem

Hi all. My system uses 2 x 10 Gal plastic bins with 2 x Tesco kettle elements in each which work brilliantly but the problem I'm having is the extension cables I'm using are getting hot. I currently plug one in in the kitchen and the other in the outhouse. I brewed this Friday gone and the plug...

Is HERMs worth the effort ?

I've been looking into HERMs myself and there's no doubt a row of stainless pots all plumbed together with pumps and electrictrickery looks very cool and is an achievement and something to be very proud of but the biggest argument I can see is the ability to repeat a brew. What's un-repeatable...

    Norwich water

Ring your water company. They should email you an up to date water report then using the data they send input it into the water treatment calculator at the top of this page. I'm in Suffolk just below the border, the water varies so much round here it's worth ringing for the most up to date one.

    Hot and cold break

I don't use a hop strainer in my copper i use the "paint straining bag" method for the hops therefore should I be leaving my wort to settle out before transferring to the FV after cooling? Would any break material in the fermenter have an adverse effect on the finished beer? I now leave my...

    Help, water treatment

Thanks for the reply, I've just sent an email. I'm brewing this morning, a stout as it happens but I've used 172 in the calculator so I'll see how I go. Thanks again.

    Help, water treatment

Right chaps, my blasted head is spinning! I live in Suffolk so I went to the eswater website typed my postcode in and it gave me what I already knew we're the results for very hard water 430mg/l CaCo3 and 172 mg/l Calcium. Next I downloaded a water report which was from 2011. Fair enough, but...

How to make a twin coil immersion chiller

Just thought i'd post this i made earlier today. That's if i've followed the "How to upload photo's" thread properly. Saw this fantastic thread during the week so i decided to have a go. It fits into a 10 gal homemade plastic boiler that's why it's so squat. Never soldered before so it isn't...

    Paint Straining Bags

Thanks dogchillibilly. I've seen a few clips on youtube about them. Just wondered if anyone this side of the pond was adventurous enough to try one. I made my own hop bags out of muslin which worked ok but were a sod to clean so not really re-useable. I'm obviously doing something wrong with my...

    Paint Straining Bags

Hi, I've been having a bit of a problem with the hops. I've got a hop filter with a fine nylon gauze sleave over it in my boiler and in 4 brews i've used it twice and both times it's clogged up, although i was running off very slowly. Last brew i opted for hop bags which worked great but i'd...

    Paint Straining Bags

Hi all, Just done a quick search but found nothing. Has anyone used nylon paint straining bags as a hop bag in the boil? I've just been reading something from over the pond and it seems quite a common thing. I've seen some 5 gal ones on fleabay but in packs of 6. Can you buy them from...

    Left overs

Hi Chaps Put my first AG brew on last Sunday (a GW Bass), a few cock-ups on brew day, only to be expected i suppose. My question is, what do i do with this left over grain? I've got 500ish grams of barley and almost a full 100g of crystal malt left over. Can i freeze it, and would there be any...
