SPENT GRAIN...BIRDS DONT LIKE IT ?

I made a sourdough style starter (ie flour and water) fed it a big dollop of Weihenstephaner and left it overnight. The next day I made a dough using more water and flour plus some salt, put a handful of spent grains from an 1845 clone into the dough and it was very good if I say so myself. All...

SPENT GRAIN...BIRDS DONT LIKE IT ?

That’s roughly what I do. I also did some using Weihenstephaner yeast which was genuinely the best bread I’ve ever made.

    Reusing bottles - Ranked

I get a perverse satisfaction from refilling my Nanny States with my more potent brews.

    Reusing bottles - Ranked

100%. I label some beers nicely for mates at Christmas etc, other than that write on the cap or stick a cheap white label on top of the frustratingly sticky Brew Dog one. It’s home brew. The most important thing is the bottles are free.

    Beef and ale pie?

I use the beer that is left over from making starters to make beef in beer and it's great.

Best cheap kettle for home built boiler

Thanks, guys. Frustratingly, those Peco prices are ex VAT so, with postage, the element plus lead come in at £29.

    Hazy Jane DIY Dog

I’ve never done a kit. Do the hops come separately or in the cans of malt extract? If it’s the latter, you can add extra hops after boiling and as dry hops but you’ll have more bitterness from the hops than would be normal in an NEIPA. It would still taste good.

    Fuggles Dry Hop...?

I agree with this. I have been pleasantly surprised a few times how much beer has changed between the end of fermentation and drinking. I did an old ale last Christmas which tasted disgusting straight out of the fv but very nice a few weeks later - in fact I’m brewing it again for this...

    Idea's please

If you use the pale, pilsner and Munich malts, moderate hopping with the Tettnang, and using the M41, I reckon you'd get something like a Patersbier. Weaker than normal Belgians, I think it it was the thirst quencher for everyday, working monks. When I say weak, you'd still be aiming for 5 - 6 ABV.

    Plug in immersion heater

Thanks. I've got an LWD in my big boiler but was hoping to skimp on the little one!! I wasn't aware of ULWD.

    Plug in immersion heater

Hmmm... maybe I'll drill a hole and fit a kettle element then. Thanks.

    Plug in immersion heater

If I make a 10 litre brew I have used a pot direct on the cooker. Sadly, the bottom got warped using it to make jam so it now doesn’t work on my hob. I’m thinking of using one of these to heat up the initial 12 litres of wort. My question is, would it be powerful enough...

    Sparge arm..

I use a grain bag too. You get virtually no dead space, no stuck sparse, good filter and easy clean up. Plus it’s cheaper and easier than fitting a false bottom.

    Stainless fermenters

I just checked my fridge and it wouldn’t fit.

    Stainless fermenters

That's my dilemma... I know the conical is the better product but I can't afford it.

    Stainless fermenters

I want to move to stainless fermenters. I can't afford a conical. Does anyone have any suggestions of a cheap simple stainless bucket. I'm thinking of a Maischfest fermenter Maischfest-Fermenting-Kettle-25-Litre-Fermentation-Tube-304-Stainless-Steel-25-Ltr.html

    Malt Miller Brilliant Service.

In the absence of any other advice, I saved the 20% and put an order in late win Sunday. The parcel arrived first thing Tuesday. I used to be a regular with Malt Miller but I've struggled with prices recently.

    Malt Miller Brilliant Service.

I've just put together an order for malt and hops for my next four brews. £80 from Brew UK or £97 from MM with p and p. Is it really that much better?

    Moving to AG.

I can't get a pot that will boil properly on our AGA so I've gone electric. Even my small 10 litre set up struggles.
