    Make marmite from yeast slush

Cheers! I'll report progress / screw ups here. First "wash", yeast sunk. Drained liquid from top the usual capillary way. Topped up with water. Rinse repeat about 4-5 times over next days...

    Make marmite from yeast slush

First step, yeast slush collected, added water. Put in an airlock in case it's still active. Three or four washes before the experiment...

    The boil

Can someone tell me why the general advice is to have no lid during the boil? Isn't it a good way to keep some aromas in?

    Apple pie ale

Add some oatmeal (soaked, baked in the oven) to make it smoother and take the edge off some of the spices.

    Make marmite from yeast slush

I think the yeast is washable -- whatever bitter there is in the slush, it's going to be soluble.

    Make marmite from yeast slush

Just came across this blog post on how to make marmite at home from the yeast slush after a brew: http://www.msmarmitelover.com/2011/04/how-to-make-your-own-marmite.html Anyone seen this? Tried this? (Sorry if it's been discussed before) Note at the bottom is important: wash the yeast...

Came across an even better deal on water. A local Turkish shop has 5L jugs of the brand "Saka" for 99p.

    Bad Bird IPA

Looks like a very interesting fruity and tropical hop range. Curious how this one turns out.

    Home grown cider

Some worms here and there, but cut away. I'm afraid I have ruined their delicious homes.

    Home grown cider

This year's apple crop from the garden all used for cider. Got a decent pH at 3.4 and SG at 1055-60. Used campden, pectolase, yeast nutrient and a blend of two yeasts: the mangrove jack and the lalvin 71B-1122. As a final touch, some bourbon wood chip.

    The Asda Eden Falls 5L jugs are the cheapest mineral water I've seen at £1,06 per jug. https://groceries.asda.com/product/still-water/asda-eden-falls-still-natural-mineral-water/19029 There's an added bonus that these jugs can be easily converted to fermenters, like so;

    Food Programme BBC R4

Gosh indeed -- almost forgot about what pubs are. Just one comment of Protz stood out and he was expressing some distant surprise at the "popularity" of "IPAs". But at the end of the talk, he also indicate that he doesn't know what direction will be next, but open to hearing ideas. Perhaps...

    Food Programme BBC R4

Listened to his one twice. Protz is no doubt a very interesting man and Camra have done great things for ale: But, apart from the brewdog controversy, I detected something of an ambivalence to the homebrew movement and the experimentation involved. Forgive me for being a noob here, but can...

    Brewed Gin and Tonic

One of the British bake off contestants recently make a g&t flavoured cake. His trick was to boil and reduce the tonic down to the syrup and apply that to the recipe. I imagine that technique might work better for the beer than merely adding tonic straight to the wort.

I got two plants from a farm in Kent, one Progress and one Challenger. I admit I can't tell them apart now !
