Kit Tweaking. How to customise and improve upon a basic kit

Good advice on Golden Stag, it is the best I have made to date. Followed it with Young’s A.P.A another great pint, followed with Coopers I.P.A which I tweaked with crystal malt 100g, flaked barley 50 g, for head retention which worked, light D.M.E500g, brewing sugar 500g and Wilko Garmin yeast...

    B&M kits

I visited the Leicester Range store to find only 1 beer kit priced £14, to much for me, but did come out with paddle, priced £1.99, so not a wasted journey.

    Adding sugar

I prefer to add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar to the pint bottle, it saves disturbing the sediment and it’s no big deal.

    Porridge oats

    Porridge oats

Strange Steve, what is a gluton rest, you mention it in respect to porridge oats. When you make the porridge flakes up, is it 2 litres of boiling water with 200 grams of flake boiled then added to F.V. If not please explain.

    Youngs American IPA

I wouldn’t risk the disappointment of a bad brew, it’s not worth it.

    Youngs American IPA

Kenboy don’t worry it will be fine, I have done both, I prefer just sprinkling hops on top of brew for 5 days, no problem with clearly of beer.

    Hop pellets

I had the same dilemma, whether to use a muslin bag or just sprinkle on the top. I did both, the bag worked fine, adding at the end of ferment when reading stayed at 1.010 for 3days, dropped bag in F.V. for 5 days, then racked off and bottled. When I dropped the pellet in at same stage 2 days...

    New Wilko kits

Cheers, will keep my eye out.

Slight solvent smell to young ipa

I would have waited 3-4 to be sure it had finished fermenting at 1.009 if so would have bottled then. I personally like to cold crash mine for 3-4 days in garage. This mean, symphony off sediment in fermenting barrel and putting in garage to clear again. Hope this help, as I am fairly new to...

    New Wilko kits

Very helpful Chippy, but have found none in Leicester that do home brew. Cheers.

    Crystal malt and flaked barley.

Thanks guys, what do you think Chippy?

    Crystal malt and flaked barley.

Hi, the conflicting advice was, to boil both the crushed crystal malt and flaked barley for 30 mins allow to cool 30 mins and add to F V, with DME, sugar and can of malt. The other was to put both in muslin bag hold at 75% for 15 mins drain and abb to FV. What would you suggest?

    Crystal malt and flaked barley.

Could someone tell me how to prepare 100 grams of crushed crystal malt and 110 grams of flaked barley to add to Coopers IPA kit as I have had conflicting advice on the forum.

    Flaked Oats for soft mouthfeel?

My apologies, must be my age, I see it is flaked oats.

    Flaked Oats for soft mouthfeel?

Could someone tell me what FO is? As a newcomer to brewing I find abbreviations annoying.
