Barrelling + botling from the same brew

Hi all, I'm about to start my first brew. For various reasons I'd like to both bottle and keg. Brew length is 5 gal & I have a 5 gal keg. I will rack from the primary into the keg+priming sugar. I know it's better not to have air in the beer after it's fermented, so I'm a bit concerned about...

    Yeast (S-04) rehydration, maintaining temperature?

I may finally get round to doing my first ever (kit) brew this weekend. I'll be using Safale-04. The suggested rehydration conditions are 27C +/- 3C for 45-60mins. For optimum rehydration should the temperature be maintained within this range for the rehydration time? I ask because: The...

Malt extract vs sugar, quick Q about ratio

When I finally get round to starting my first homebrew which is a Youngs Harvest Bitter Kit, I intend to use malt extract rather than sugar. I know DME has a lower %fermentable than sugar and I'd rather not lose too much ABV. I've seen mention of using 1.1X and 1.2X the specified mass of sugar...

    Question re: different spraymalts

Well, I ordered various bits & pieces I need to do the brew yesterday, and I've got 1kg of medium & 500g dark spraymalt. I'll see what happens! I'd rather not put any white sugar in it, maybe I'll think about using the 1kg of medium with 500g light brown sugar. It is the first brew so I'm...

    Conditioning temperature in the summer

I'll be starting my first brew soon and am concerned about temperatures. Unfortunately there's only one place in the house I'm going to be able to keep the beer - on the kitchen table. I reckon the fermentation temperature will be OK, I'll be keeping an eye on it anyway. Having said that, do you...

    Question re: different spraymalts

This will of course be a matter of taste, but I'm after a bit of advice for a newby. I'll be trying a first brew soon with a Youngs Harvest Yorkshire Bitter kit. I'll be using a spraymalt instead of household sugar, but am wondering which spraymalt to use. Presumably the darker the malt, the...

    Sanitation advice for a newby

I must admit I like the sound of the videne. A quick Googling has revealed people having some on hand to do little bits of sanitising on brew day, e.g. thermometers and spoons. I'll see if I can get some. As to rinsing to remove VWP, would that be a couple of filling ups of the vessel with...

    Sanitation advice for a newby

Cheers, I was really concerned about having to deal with such a volume of liquid & how to tip it out/rinse the FV. It's just occured to me that I have a syphon of course so that'll make the job easier! Also, I should've posted the original message in the Beer Brewing Discussion forum, sorry. It...

    Sanitation advice for a newby

More newby questions. I'll get started on the brew eventually! I'm after a bit of sanitation advice. The main thing is the FV, everything else that comes into contact with the wort I'll sanitise in a bucket and give a few good washes with cooled, boiled water to remove the disinfectant (I have...

An introduction, and too many questions from a newby!

I'm rather looking forward to trying all of this out - I'll post progress when I get things going. Another question re: casking. Should I prime the cask or not? The CAMRA book I have is of the opinion that a well-brewed beer, left to condition long enough shouldn't need either priming or...

An introduction, and too many questions from a newby!

Stainless stell would be alright though, yes? Probably as long as it isn't left in there too long. Mind you, if I boil some water in it for washing out the FV/dissolving the kit ingredients or any other purpose, it'll be sanitized enough no doubt.

An introduction, and too many questions from a newby!

Cheers to ano & jamesb (& for pointing me in this direction!) Righty-ho. Maybe I'll get a paddle as well then. I'll be getting some in as well then! I'll bear that in mind! Oh, another question regarding sorting the temperature of the wort. The kit has a suggested amount of hot/cold...

An introduction, and too many questions from a newby!

I've been drinking real ale for years, and have for ages had half an intention to try brewing my own. Knowing me rather well, my wife was pretty sure I'd never actually get round to it so as a surprise Father's Day present she's bought me some kit, bless her. There's no way I'd be able to leave...
