Oh dear. I thought brew day was going too smoothly. I suddenly realised I was mashing with no malt pipe in my BZ4. Thank God for the false bottom! I managed to tip out the mash into the malt pipe held in a bucket & sparged as normal.

Calling this one “Malt Pipe?” as a reminder!

Recipe - 5kg Maris otter, 25g leaf Harlequin (60 min), 50g Harlequin, 50g Citra (hop stand).

Assuming I don’t screw up anything else it should be banging 😀

Tipping before sparge is not necessary.
I just emptied with a 'floating sparge'. Adding sparge water, at same rate pump was emptying wort into a bucket. The malt pipe never even got wet!
Only downside, was the wort in bucket cooled a but, while I was emptying and cleaning the BZ.

The BZ tall narrow profile, is more likely to lead to slow recirculation, or a stuck mash. Dispensing with the malt pipe, actually improves the aspect ratio and chances of success.

I'm not sure if this is the correct method or not, but it works for me anyway. I always treat the liquid below the malt pipe as 'dead space' and so calculate mash water volume excluding this. In my case it's almost three litres, so if the mash water is calculated at 15 litres, I use 18 litres.
