Hi All,

I've been playing around with the BrewMate application attempting to concoct my first recipe and I am just wondering what people think? I'm aiming for a high IBU and ABV, but is it too high?

Zeropanic IPA (English IPA)

Original Gravity (OG): 1.070 (°P): 17.1
Final Gravity (FG): 1.018 (°P): 4.6
Alcohol (ABV): 6.88 %
Colour (SRM): 8.1 (EBC): 16.0
Bitterness (IBU): 59.9 (Average)

80% Liquid Malt Extract - Light
20% Dry Malt Extract - Amber

3.7 g/L Fuggles (5.7% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
1.2 g/L East Kent Golding (4.7% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
1.2 g/L East Kent Golding (4.7% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)

0.4 g/L Irish Moss @ 15 Minutes (Boil)

Single step Infusion at 66°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Fermented at 20°C with Wyeast 1098 - British Ale

Any feedback much appreciated.

Cheers,

Amos

hi , i would of thought the ibu is about right for a bitter beer , some medium type are around 30/40 so i would say your about right there . i would drop the og down to around 1060/1065 as that will be strong at around 6.5% abv , too strong and it loses flavour but that's also down to personal taste , however the stronger it is the longer it will need to condition so you could be looking at a long wait . And i take it you aren't steeping as it's an extract recipe only , good luck with it .

Hi pittsy,

Good to get some feedback and nice to hear someone thinks its not too far off the mark. Yes, no steeping involved in this one, although I have considered some crystal or rye malt steeped prior to the boil for flavour. To be honest, I'd not considered the conditioning time it would need so perhaps the high OG needs looking into again.

Cheers.

Hi and thanks for the feedback. I've modified the recipe now to include some Crystal 10 steeped for a little flavour and lowered the extract amounts to bring the ABV down to approximately 6%.

Would it be worth dry hopping with the EKG do you think?

Cheers,

For me I'd lower the amount of crystal to about 10g/litre. It's personal taste at the end of the day but I find that level to be perfect. At that gravity it is likely to have a sweet flavour any way, so won't need too much help from the crystal.
I've done quite a few beers with your kind of hop profile but recently have changed my 5 minute hop boil to an addition at flameout and a 20 minute steep before it goes into the FV. You could also add a BIG DOLLOP of hops at flameout with your existing plan. It will give a massive hop flavour, which is what I like. If you use an American hop like Cascade or citra you'll have something which would suit me.................not that that will matter to you, it's your beer!

So half the Crystal would still add enough flavour then? Fair enough, I don't want it to be too sweet. As for the hops, I think I will consider steeping during cooling prior to pitching the yeast, as I like a lot of hop in there too. I'll stick with the EKG though to keep in the with the English theme, although I do love Cascade. Perhaps I'll come up with a similar, but American IPA, with Chinook and Cascade in the near future :) Always nice to experiment.
