Youngs Handy Airlock Question

Hi all

I have just bought 2 Youngs handy airlocks like these ones http://www.brewuk.co.uk/store/index.php ... l-2-s.html

I have been used to the other bubbly airlocks and was woundering how do these work? do i put the top back on them when i have filled them with water? and do i fill them all the way to the top??

Sorry for such a basic question

i have two of those, i half fill with water and then stick the top back on.

No, only fill them to around one third then pop the top back on. I only use this type of trap, I find the height more convenient, they are easier to clean, and they are also cheaper.

Thanks for your reply's, but if you put the top back on does this not stop the air escaping? and make it more likely to blow?

The top isn't gastight, CO2 can escape, but it's a tight enough push fit that it isn't going to blow off.
