Yeah. Take another reading in a day or so, if it hasn't changed, chuck in the hops.

Mine left a thick bitty scum on top which got everywhere on bottling day, so I would use a bag if you can.
Cheers mate, yeah I'll check again Thursday night & chuck in then! Got a couple muslin bags from the ipa I did so yeah definitely using them!

I recently brewed a batch of
the APA and can share my experience. my OG was 1.042. I waited 13 days before checking it again and found a value of 1.004. I dry hopped and checked again at 15 days: no further change. So my final ABV was 5.0%. It hovered around 18C throughout.

Your values correspond to 5.5% so it's likely done it's business. If you want to err on the side of caution, you could wait another couple of days and see if it drops further. Or you could chance it and chuck the hops in now (but check again before bottling, if you're bottling. If you're kegging it's not a biggie if it's not quite finished).

Either way, you'll need a bit of patience: it only really started to taste nice at the 30 day mark (and I expect it to keep improving). Good luck!
Thanks mate, quick question...how'd the fermentation compare to the ipa for you? I've had a few bubbles through the airlock after a couple days but it's been nowhere near as aggressive as the ipa. The vessel doesn't have any leaks cause I can push in the lid & force bubbles through the airlock. Was yours similar??

Just got this on at 1060. Brew fridge set for 22 C. I've sort of lost my beer mojo recently so I'm hoping this will be a little special and get the juices flowing again.

I just put this on, only brewed to 22 Litres as concerned about it bubbling over, ( have stood in a trub to catch the potential eruption) BUT, got an OG of 1.066 which seems very high to what I have read on here !
I have not added any thing extra in the way of sugars .
Does this seem overly high , any problem with OG being this high ?

The American IPA is a beautiful pint we went to cheers homebrew store for their opening and Lee Porter from youngs had brewed 5 or 6 of the two can kits

The APA was better with only half the hops

Started this kit on Feb 2nd and bottled 2 weeks ago, 20th Feb, so 18 days in the fermenter.
Of course really desperate to try a bottle so gave in to temptation last night after nearly 2 weeks in a warm area.
Chilled in the fridge all day and then removed and left to stand at room temperature (quite cool) for about an hour before opening.
My thoughts, very hoppy and leaves a nice lasting taste on the tongue with a good carbonation but slightly cloudy, maybe a chill haze and probably still a little 'green'. The yeast deposit in the bottom of the bottle seems a little unstable so requires careful pouring.
All in all i'm happy with this kit and hopeful that with more time it will develop and taste even better.

I messed up my priming and have ended up with a very lightly carbed beer but it tastes divine

Hi all, a bit of help needed here please.
Have got this down to 1.008 after 14days at 20C giving ABV of 7.6%
Not sure why so high, sure it shouldn't be ! Anyway added hops in muslin bag when was at 1.010 for 4 days , so SG has't moved that much. Removed hops this morning 9am to bottle this afternoon but when I took lid off FV there was still a few bubbles and bits of yeast moving round so decided to leave the bottling for now. I cant see the SG moving much more as it has been at 1.008 for a couple of days, Do you think this will be ok to bottle tomorrow ( can't do it now as i have now started drinking :drink: ) and why is abv so high ????

I suspect your OG reading may be wrong, for what ever reason. This kit comes with
3.0 to 3.5kg liquid malt and 0.5 to 1 kg dextrose total 4kg if I remember correctly. If you put that into the calculator http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/calculator/
it comes up with something about 1.055/1.057 @ 22 litres. To get 1.066 you would be looking to add another 500g fermentables. I don't think the calculator is that far out, in fact it usually ties up pretty well with what I do.
As far as bottling it looks like it has bottomed out so you could go ahead if you need to. However it won't do any harm to leave it longer.
PS: OG 1.057 and FG 1.008 = 6.5% ABV, which magically ties in with Youngs claimed 6.5%!

Ive just bottled my American IPA, and it was very cloudy, so hoping secondary ferm will sort things out. The smell in the brew bin was just divine.Hop, hops and more hops.

This was my third brew and I got 37 500ml bottles out of it, but then again I had a bad time with not putting the hops in a muslin and blocking the bottle wand and sediment trap, and ended up stirring up a lot of sediment. A great beer though Pope, I really recommend it if you like the American hop-bombs.

You're saying that the bottle wand was blocked because you didn't put the hops in the muslin bag?

I'm currently in the process of fermenting this beer and am wondering whether or not to invest in some muslin bags for the hopping stage...

I just bought 3 muslin bags for dry hopping. I intend to sterilise them by placing in boiling water for a few minutes first. Otherwise you will have a lot of crud in your FV, tho this is not a major problem.

So I started this on friday, before I found this thread, and I've had the bother with the airlock blocking up and had to make a blow off tube, which has also blocked twice and caused a bit of a mess. From what I've read, a lot of people have this experience, but can you tell me how long this tends to go on for? I don't want to come home to a kitchen full of foam! The fermentation kicked in on sunday morning if that's any sort of guide?

Yeah, exactly. The hop sludge got stuck in the bottling wand, and so I had to stop using it and just squeeze the tubing to stop the flow between bottles. Then the sediment trap got blocked too, so I ended up just using the tube with nothing on either end. It was messy. The beer still tasted great and nothing got infected, but some of the bottles were overfilled, and some ended up with lots of sediment or with bits of hops floating around in them. I've dry hopped with pellets since then by putting them in a muslin (boiled for a minute to sterilise), and haven't had the problem since.

Update on mine. Today is day 14 in the FV, SG is 1007, so I've dropped the hops in, smells amazing! Also impressed with how the sample tastes too, this is gonna be a nice one:thumb:

Was my first kit too.

My soon to be empty pb is calling out for possibly another batch of this (I don't trust my pb with my ag brews at the moment) and I think this is still my favourite kit to date.

I think I dry hopped for 5 days fwiw.

Try not to drink it too quickly...m

I'm going to do one of these kits next in a Coopers FV, is there enough headroom for the fermentation? or am I going to have an overflow.
