I decided to bin it and do an extract recipe IPA instead. I had high hopes but after 3-4 weeks in primary and 2 in secondary, it still tasted absolutely horrible. I'm not sure where I went wrong, really.
Have you seen my thread "ipa tastes like poison?"
I contacted youngs, they replied saying no one else has complained....
...maybe you should?

I have to say i think mine has failed!

tried after a few weeks and it was really cloudly and not great but i thought i would hang out for a few more weeks and cross my fingers.

5 and half weeks in total now its been in the bottle and it still tastes pretty awful.
I dont think its the fact that maybe i dont like the beer, reading the reviews on here i really think i should be enjoying this kit. The beer is loads clearer now than it was a few weeks ago, but its pretty flat and the taste is just horrible.... i actually find it hard to describe... acidic almost... with just the smell of hops int he backgroound..... think its time to pour down the sink :(:(

Wow,opinions range from superb to rank rotten !
Mine was Superb and hoppy to begin with but the last few bottles are ok with a bit of a weird aftertaste?
I think it's one to drink early,I've said it before, try the American Amber Ale,it's just better IMO.

How long did the krausen stay on the surface for you guys? Mine has been there a week and is showing no signs of sinking, is that normal? It has gone after a few days on all the other brews I've done. It also stinks of yeast but I guess that is the krausen.

Hi guys I'm after a little help/advice
I'm a complete novice when it comes to brewing, this being only the second kit I've done
Anyways I was given this kit as a gift and it's been on the go for 6 days now.
I've followd the instructions down to a T, I've kept the temp around 18-20 and not moved or opened the fv
Anyway everything as been hunky dory up to this point, been bubbling away very nicely but now it's completely stopped and I know this ain't right but with being a novice I haven't got a clue what to do
Any help or advice would be very grateful?

The krausen stays for over two weeks. Day 22 before I moved it and added the hops

Mine was bottled on day 26 so I would leave it a good while yet. I had a reading of 1010 on day 11 but left it another 11 before adding the hops and had a reading of 1002. Bottled after another 4 days. You should get a hop sock or muslin bag for the hop pellets

I had one of these kits for Christmas. I've been brewing at 17/18°C and after a slow start, it did all the right things. Added the hop pellets after two weeks when the SG was at 1.008 for three days. Barrelled it last night. It was cloudy but tasted OK at this stage. Now its got two days at a warmer temp before I pop it outside in the shed for a bit.
My only problem with the kit so far is that the instructions seem to contradict themselves as far as temps and brew lengths go so I've used SG and finger in air technology.
This is my first attempt at brewing and only stumbled upon this forum today; interesting to see so many different experiences with the same product.
Hopefully in a few weeks I can report back good news!
I wish I'd read about muslin bags for the hops though!

Don't worry too much about the instructions.. As it is I am actually giving the AAA kit a go right now and it has the same instruction booklet. You will soon learn your own gauge and methods for brewing and treat them guides as a rough guide with specifics.

By teh sounds of things you done it all okay, you hot the gravity and hopped after a few weeks then barrelled.

Thanks. I realise that I'm brewing at a slightly lower temp than recommended, but as the SG moved in the right direction thought that I wouldn't worry too much. It is like awaiting a birth though; I just want to get stuck in to drinking it.

The slightly lower temp is typically not a bad thing, mine too has went around your temps. Where possible unless the specific yeast type calls for it I would rather brew this side of 20ºc than the other side.

And yes the patience thing is the most difficult part, best thing to help alleviate this is to start thinking about your next one and build the cycle

I honestly think this is as close to a Brewdog Punk IPA as you could brew without trying :wha:
If only I had a bottle left I could try a size by side

pms67 have you tried the bulldog evil dog it is very much the same and when I tried the Punk IPA I thought it was the same. I actually preferred the evil dog to the youngs but only just I will be doing them both again

Not yet mate, haven't tried any bulldog kits yet,so many kits so little time !

Tried my first bottle last night after 2 weeks in the bottle. There is a slight unpleasant smell (presumably caused by the issues I had during fermentation) but the taste is very nice, definitely the best kit I've done.

My ipa has a "slight" peculiar taste. The apa i did at the same time went bad. It was vile.
That same vile taste is evident in ipa.
No one else can taste it but ive become super sensitive to that particular acrid aroma. I think its something to do with the hops.
Hmmmmm....
Brewed ipa, aaa and the apa is two weeks in the fv now. Not really impressed by any of them so far... my wherrys with citra and cascade kicks more hops out...

My IPA was barrelled two weeks ago and I've tested it a couple of times since. Taste is fine but still very cloudy. I assume SF at a lower temp (18°C) is probably responsible for this. Its been out in the shed for a few days now so I'm hoping that the cold will clear it up a bit. One thing I've noticed is its reluctance to come out the tap; do you think I've got a load of sediment in there? I thought I was really careful siphoning it out of the PF.
