Hi All, I am brewing Youngs American IPA for the first time and need some advice. For the first and second day the brew head came out of the airlock a lot ! and then very little bubbling for the next 5 days, today the 8th day the bubbles have stopped. I took a Hydrometer reading of 1052 at start of fermentation and today its 1005 (which is below when it says to add hops at 1010). The instructions says to leave for 10 to 15 days for the first fermentation but it looks like its finished after 8 ?.

Do I leave for another few days or if the Hydrometer reading says 1005 again tomorrow do i carry on and add hops?
Also its very cloudy too will it self clear or is it best to use finnings?

and one mre if i can my favourate beer is Punk IPA and Badger champion whats the best copies for these (if there are any) IMG_20201203_165708.jpg

Any help or advice would be very welcome.
 
It's just fermented quickly that's all.
I suggest you leave it in the warm for 2 more days so the yeast finishes its job, then add your hops, leave in the warm for a further 2 days, and then if the SG has stabilised find the coldest place you have above 0*C and put it there for 2 more days. The cold place will help clear your beer of yeast and drop the hops ready for bottling. No need for finings.
 
Thanks terrym for your advice. Does this brew have a bitter after taste i did St Peters IPA and it as a bitter after taste ?. New to all this and want to find something I like.

hi lamby it looks and sounds exactly like mine, i started it 2 weeks ago today from the youngs American ipa kit and the first 2 days the temp rose to 28° as i had a heat mat under it, it had a blow out of the airlock too but not too massive, then it took a day or 2 for activity to start again, i kept the temp at a steady 22° for a week then the airlock activity dropped to a minute per bubble, a gravity reading on day 8 was 1009 so i added the hops which was probably too soon as I’ve found out on here, the hops have been in for 6 days now with 3 readings of 1004 and i have had it in a fridge at 4-5° for the last 2 days and tomorrow i will be bottling/kegging it. It’s my first ever brew and without the help of Terrym and others on here I’m sure i would have made a total pigs ear of it. I have had a taste from the readings samples and i expected it to taste like old boots as it was my first attempt but i am very surprised how good it tastes and can’t wait for it to settle and develop for a few weeks more. The photo of the hydrometer appears to me to show 1.008 or 1.010 (depending on whether yours reads at the top or bottom of the meniscus. Most read at the bottom apparently, mine reads true at the top (calibrated in tap water)).
Or was the photo an earlier reading and you were just illustrating the colour?
I have this kit fermenting - or possibly not - at the moment.
It appeared to stop after 5 days when it was at 1.014. There was no activity for the following 5 days but the gravity then read 1.012. I am wondering if I have a fractional air leak in the fermenter lid. I have read that others have experienced this kit fermenting for 3 and 4 weeks.
I will not add hops until I know that fermentation has ceased and will then leave the bucket in the warm for 3 days before moving outside in the shed for a couple of days to encourage hops to fall to the bottom.
I will find out tomorrow whether the gravity has fallen in the last week - fingers crossed!

Hi Pete, yes only my second so in the same boat. Like you said not expecting too much but you never know. You will have to keep posting defo need to know how it turns out lol

Its a long while since I did this kit. It was quite bitter if I remember correctly. I actually preferred the APA kit.
Nonetheless its a good kit beer.
And @Pavalijo is correct about the SG reading. athumb..
You photo shows about 1.008/1.009. If that is the case and your reading is not 1.005 after all, I would leave it until your SG has bottomed out before you add the hops, and not before. Then two perhaps three days in the warm and two days in a cold place, then it should be OK to bottle.
 
If it were me, I'd rack the beer into a clean fermentation vessel and leave the trub and dead yeast behind. The shock of moving it tends to kick start a drop of another degree or so of gravity, but more importantly encourages the beer to clear. When you chuck in the charge of dry hops, it'll start up again for a short while and when that's over, it'll be ready to bottle.

Hi Pavalijo. I was reading the bottom and yes it was mainly for the colour ;-). Im going to go with what Terrym as said hes the expert round here. Just want to say ive brewed a great IPA , everyone says that this is one of the best IPA's.

Hi An Ankou that sounds interesting so lave for a few more day, ensure FG is stable the put into new FB. Sounds like a plan.

I’ll keep you posted after i bottle it tomorrow, if i could go back to the start, after what I’ve been told on here, i wouldve left it another 5 or 6 days fermenting before i added the hops but i was just going off the instructions which people tell me are very optimistic time wise so in future I’ll come on here for advice. By the way can anybody advise me on what temperature to leave my kegs and bottles at for the next 3-4 weeks to settle and clear.

Well my IPA has been in secondary ferment for 2 weeks at 20°C and after having a little taste today it tastes pretty good, it’s a bit smoother than last week but a bit of a problem with my pressure barrel i think, last week i drew off a couple of glasses to test and i heard the dreaded glug of air being sucked back up the tap so i topped up with a cartridge of co2 straight away and left it. This week i drew half a glass off and the same thing happened so I’ve topped up again with another capsule of co2, it’s a brand new pb first time use but if it happens again next week then i think i may have a leak. Just a quick question, what temp should i leave it at to clear and condition for the next few weeks.
 
Hi fan, just bottled mine and in the sf now. Was told that after 2 weeks put in garage should be fine. What was the small and taste like. Dreading it having a bitter taste like my first ipa.

Hi lamby, it smells really nice, the first taste last week after a week at 20°C was a little harsh and a little bitter, not overpowering but not very smooth. Today another week on it smells even better and the taste is a bit smoother not as bitter and pretty drinkable now. I’d be happy being served a pint of it in a pub as is. I’ll leave it at around 10° for another 2 weeks and test again week on week. Hope yours turns out ok. There’s no citrus flavour like you get with some ipa’s which is good for me. I bottled 5litres with 3 small pet bottles as testers but I haven’t tried one of those yet, another week for those. Did you bottle all of yours lamby? I think i may have underprimed my bottles as when i used the priming calculator i used the temp measurement as was and not the temp of fermentation which i was told I should’ve used and as i cold crashed mine at 5° there was a 14° difference so i may have put not enough sugar in, only time will tell. Keep me,posted how yours turns out when you test it.
 
Hi Fan, sounds very good. I have bottled all mine in pet and glass with carbonation drops (2). Did the same with my St Peters IPA and worked out fine (i do get the bitter taste which i dont like !!). I was trying to copy the Punk IPA and I like the citrus taste myself. Getting the Mangrove jacks grapefruit for chrismas to try next, suspect if i get a bitter taste with all i will move onto an APA suggested by another member on here. let me know what they are like cant wait lol.

I really need to find somethg that is not bitter and looking for any advice
 
I only brewed this kit once, it did have the typical aipa taste quite bitter and dry.Two weeks in the corny keg and it tasted pretty good.One of my friends loves this kit and brews it alot.

If you dont mind doing part grain kits dark rock have some very good kits.

Thanks chilli, I’ll check it out. This aipa is my first venture into home brewing but I do eventually want to try ag but I’m a bit over awed with it at the moment.
 
I done a few kits then jumped on the part grain kits.It does take a couple of hours more, but the results are really worth the extra time.

All you need extra is a 12/15 ltr stock pot and thermometer.
full instructions are included and very straight forward to follow.

I you like the pale ale and citrus, try the citrus smash kit, it really is a big step up from the extract kits.There is plenty of folks on here more than willing to help if you need it.

Thanks chilli, sounds like it might be the next step up for me. I’ll try a few kits first to get the process right so i know what to look for and what order to do things then I’ll ease into grain brews.
