To be honest, I have not had it for many a year, think ford cortina, escort days, courage light and bitter!
Would certainly like to brew some to bottle, if any one has a good recipe for all grain.

My sampling was just under 20 years ago. I remember when I worked behind the bar there in my holidays from uni. One old boy, 90 odd years old, used to come in 10:00 on the dot and have a Gold Label and half pint of mild, followed by a double Grouse every night. I’d have it ready on the bar for him when he walked in. Then he’d drive himself home at once Id rang the bell...

Is this it

I confess I’ve never tried it (hadn’t actually heard of it until this thread).

Commercial barley wine wise Gun Brewery produce a decent one, and Cloudwater has had some excellent Barley Wines though seem to be one off specials rather than regular beers.

This kit I found made a nice base, I considered doing all grain but with the large grain bill would probably need to do a 4.5-5L batch.

Thats the one!

Love this review of Gold Label off the Asda web site:

I can’t get enough of this beer. Like a late winters sunset it is deep gold in colour and goes down slowly. If you like a full bodied, hoppy, crisp beer with the intense embrace of a long lost lover then you are in for a treat. Add a hint of pine and resin notes and bearded bready malt and you are in business my friend. It is definitely fitting of its gold label as it would always get a top podium finish in my beer Olympics, I have lost count of how many times I have spent the day enjoying the company of good friends on a park bench in my local park whilst consuming can after can of this strong nectar of the gods. No, literally, I can’t remember. A+

Not had a Barley wine in 30 years and fancy something a little different from what I usually make (wines, TC's and the odd stout) so think I'll have a go at this.

Anyone tried it? Is there a go to barley wine kit?

Thanks.
A recipe to brew Barley wine from a kit is as follows. A 40 pint Geordie Bitter kit made to 12 pints without the addition of any added sugar. When the initial fermentation has finished in the fermentation bin syphon into a couple of demijohns under airlocks. When fermentation has stopped, bottle.

I remember trying Gold Label when I got my membership to the local war memorial club at erm sort of 18. My tastes may have changed slightly but I cant remember being so keen... can you still buy it?
Yes you can. My wife bought a four pack to put some in a Christmas pudding. She used one can,I drank another. That’s the next two years Christmas puddings taken care of.

That good eh?! 🤣

Yup, for a 7.5% beer it was rubbish. It tasted like something you could have knocked up in a chemistry lesson.

To be fair it’s probably been ‘conditioning’ on the shelves for a while- cannot imagine it flies off the shelves!
