hello mate, fairley straightforward, followed instructions on thecan, but i substituted the sugar with the same amount of beer enhancer(which i got from wilko's), now in a fermentation bin with an airlock on the top, bubbling away nicely, now its the waiting game

did you measure the original gravity and record it! assuming you have a hydrometer then it is good practise as i have been learning myself!

get another one on then you wont be so tempted to drink the first before its matured and primed for a couple of weeks!

and good luck i hope it turns out well as once you start ya cant stop its abit like pringles!

no i never took a reading, dont have an hydrometer, ill get one though, is it posssible to take a reading when i bottle?

thanks JB

You really should get a hydrometer.
When your beer has has remained at the same gravity for three days it is time to bottle (hopefully 1.012 or under).
You will not be able to calculate the ABV as you don't have your Original Gravity reading.
Hope it turns out well!

as with most Geordie kits the OG will be around the 1.040 mark. And you can expect it to drop to 1.006 - 1.008. And the expected ABV will be around the 4.2% mark. But i agree with the rest get yourself a hydrometer. They only cost a couple of quid and they are worth there weight in gold.

Hope that helps.

Hi

I've just bought a hydrometer, is it ok to take a reading now or shall i just wait until the final days of my brew?

Peace

Hi Guys,

I've just bottled my 1st brew, 48*330ml and 8*500ml, i ran short on bottles had to leave a couple of pints, final gravity reading was 1003, un fortunately i dont have an initial reading. i was quite impressed with my 1st attempt, cleared well when taking Gravity and the taste was ok.
a couple of queastions-

How do i store my bottles for comditioning?

and how long do i need to leave it before cracking one open?

and finally how long will the beer last in terms of shelf life?

many thanks

JB

Store them up-right in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
Mature them for at least 3-4 weeks to get a bit of bead (fizz) and flavour.
I don't think "sell by date's" a problem.
The major problem is, how long can you just sit there and look at them!

Greetings,

Well i finally did it lastnight, cracked open several bottles of my 1st brew, and ive got to say i'm impressed with the overall quality. The brew was a couple of days short of being in the bottle for 3weeks, there was very little sediment at the bottom, on pouring into a glass, the beer was very clear and developed a nice head, which lined the glass all the way down. The beer overall was what i was hoping to achieve, the taste was smooth, the carbonation levels just right for me, was hoping to achieve a level similar to a real ale, and boy did i get it right. When ive tried brewss in the past, they all have a yeasty taste to them, but i somehow managed to make a brew without this taste, and this just makes me wanna get another on the go, i will soon :) a few friends came over lastnight to help me sample the end product, one of whom has been brewing for a year or so, he's made several brews of varied quality, and his response was " you've cracked it Bri, your 1st brew and youve blown everyone of mine out of the water, well done mate, what a lovely drop"

so overall m very happy with it and looking forward to sampling again over the coming weeks to see howe much more it can develop
