I recently did a ribena wine and made a yeast starter just using youngs yeast and nutrient.I was really impressed with how quick the brew started fermenting.Just wondering should I make a starter when I do a coopers or betterbrew kit?Or is it best to leave alone? Also,if Im adding more fermentables say honey or syrup should I bung some nutrient in to help it get star  ted?

And adding nutrient to a kit? Would that ensure fermentation starts quickly,Its not that im in a rush just want to give it as much help as possible.

It will do no harm, also it is best practice to rehyrate your dried yeast. Use cooled boiled water, depending on your yeast that could be 24C to 30C, use 10 x the weight of yeast, sprinkle on top 30 mins before pitching, stir after 15mins, continue with stirring for 15mins, then pitch.

I just did my 1st brew a coopers australian lager and i used the starter (i mixed the 3tsp of suger with 2tsp nutrrient in half cup of luke warm water then added the yeast and covered). left it till i mixed up my fv and filled it up . when the temp was about 24c i added the mixer too my fv. The whole process was about 2 to 3 hours and wow in 24 hrs it was going great.. I started this last thursday and today it is still a little cloudy (but getting clearer by the day) but not bothered as i dont plan on bottling it till probably sunday.

But like i said this was my first go but even on my 2nd brew i will be doing the same.. :D

Re-hydrate rather than starter.

For dried yeast this is the best way :thumb: No need for starters as the yeast is designed to work this way

If you are making starters ( for liquid yeasts ) then don't use sugar - you need to use a wort. Make up a litre using 100g of DME to get a good starter around 1.040
