Hi Guys,

I'm still relatively new to home brewing and am planning my 2nd BIAB session.

I'm going to need to make a yeast starter for this one which will be a first for me.

I have the stuff at home to build a stir plate and this is on the hit list for this weekend, but, I don't have a flask.

I've been looking at the 5L erlenmeyer's but they still work out fairly expensive. I do have 1Gl glass carboy though which will also hold 5 liters (at capacity).

Has anyone here tried to use a carboy on a stir plate before? I don't think it has a domed bottom so the stirrer should spin ok. I've been searching the web and the forum but haven't found anything.

Any ideas?

Sure, anything with a flat bottom will work, as long is the glass isn't too thick.

Mine works OK with a demi, it's a bit tricky to get it caught on the magnet and if you turn it up to fast I flicks the bar of but it just about works

On the grounds that you need to build the stirplate anyway, just build it and then have a dry (wet) run with the carboy full of water. My concern would be that the base of the carboy will be too thick to allow the magnet/s to work effectively.

Adding extra neodymium magnets will help. I've got four on mine. Two for each end of the stir bar, and now I can spin a lot faster without flicking off than when I used only two magnets. I bet it would work on thicker glass too.
